Solar Eclipse Day
Greetings Dealey Community! Happy Sunday!🌞
Thank you for a great week last week! It was nice to see and visit with all the parents at the Coffee with the Principal on Wednesday. We appreciate you all! We have a very busy week here at Dealey. On Wednesday 4/10/24 , we will begin official STAAR testing. We are also excited about tomorrow’s Solar Eclipse event. Thank you to the Dealey parents and guardians that have agreed to volunteer tomorrow.
Solar Eclipse Parent/Guardian Check In:
1. All parents/guardians will check in at the main office. Please schedule to arrive before 11:30 am so that all check ins can be completed by 12:00 pm. When parents arrive on campus, please bring your State ID/Drivers License for Raptor approval.
2. All parents were asked to RSVP with your child’s home room or advisory teacher. All teachers have already submitted their RSVPs to the main office.
3. Parents were asked to also submit Voly to enter campus tomorrow. All parents/guardians over the age of 18 must be approved on Voly, be listed on PowerSchool and approved on Raptor.
4. We have already completed the parent/guardian approval list. All parents/guardians must be on the approval list to enter campus tomorrow. This is a non-negotiable request . If you still need approval or have questions about your approval, please email Ms. Gonzalez-Johnson immediately at krgonzalez@dallasisd.org.
5. After checking in the front office, please visit Mrs. Simmons in the front foyer for directions and the location of your student’s class. Please go to the location provided and assist the teacher as needed with actively monitoring students.
6. All parents must have their own Solar eclipse glasses for tomorrow’s event.
Dealey Solar Eclipse Announcements:
1. UPDATE-We will only cancel Solar Eclipse activities in the event of rain only. In the case of Overcast, Cloudy , etc. we will still have our activities. 🎊 Please communicate your Overcast/Cloudy weather plans with parents immediately.
2. GroupMe will be the official communications channel during the Solar Eclipse for Dealey staff.
3. Tomorrow, Monday April 8, 2024 is a Free Dress Day for all students and staff. (Space theme, Solar Eclipse theme or Free Dress/Spirit Day.) This includes jeans and athletic shoes. Pajamas are not allowed.
4. Mrs. Simmons will be our logistics manager tomorrow. She will have a station in the front foyer giving parents directions to their students. Teachers will keep her updated of all class movement throughout the day.
5. When parents arrive, they will be directed to their student’s location on campus. (Classroom, Lunch, Recess, Specials, etc.)
6.All Opt -Out students will be in the library with a Dealey staff member.
7. When will we wear our solar glasses?
Dealey Montessori and International Academy located in Dallas, Texas is within the Solar eclipse “path of totality”.
Viewers MUST be within the path of totality to witness the total phase of the eclipse; if you are off the path by even a mile, you will only see a partial eclipse, and miss out on the daytime darkness. Furthermore, the closer you are to the center of the path of totality, the longer totality will last for you.
Note: Totality is the ONLY TIME when it is safe to view the sun without protective eyewear like certified solar eclipse glasses. You must protect your eyes during the entire partial phase of the eclipse, no matter where you are.
Students will be closely monitored and assisted by Dealey staff and approved parent/guardian volunteers.
8. All students are asked to bring a blanket and water bottle for the Solar Eclipse event.

Zero Tolerance Policy on Hate Speech
Our school mission states we provide an exemplary Montessori education that empowers all students to become productive citizens in our global society. Here at Dealey, we have a zero tolerance policy for any form of hate speech stemmed from negative biases. All students that are using any form (race, religious, etc.) are placed on mandatory in person parent conference and issued additional actions (consequences) in accordance with the Dallas ISD Student Code of Conduct. You will receive a notice from the Dealey Dignity Center regarding all discipline escalated to the Assistant Principal and/or Principal’s office.

UPDATE (2/25/24)
The solar viewing glasses from the Perot Museum of Nature and Science have arrived, and we will start delivering them to campuses tomorrow morning! It’s going to take some time for my staff and I to divide them up for each school and central staff department and for our delivery driver to deliver them, but they are on the way so please be on the lookout for them at your campus. They will arrive in a paper bag or box that will have your name on it and someone at the school will need to sign for them.
Once you have your glasses, please store them in a secure location until you use them on April 8, 2024. Consider the following factors when storing your glasses:
- Temperature: Extreme temperatures can adversely affect the materials used in eclipse glasses. Please keep them in a room-temperature environment.
- Moisture: Humidity can damage the solar filters. Store the glasses in a place with low humidity.
- Light: While not a crucial as temperature or moisture, it is a good idea to keep your glasses in a dark place to help maintain the integrity of the filters.

Additional Instructional Supports
The team at NASA’s Neurodiversity Network has recently developed an Eclipse Guide for Neurodiverse Learners in preparation for the eclipse. We are requesting that campus leaders share this information with teachers that work with students who have autism. One of the Neurodiversity Network’s team members, Dr. Ariana Riccio, is leading the effort to partner with schools on teaching STEM concepts. Schools or participating classrooms interested in this partnership would have completely free and full access to curriculum support from NASA-funded heliophysicists and specialists in curriculum design for students with autism. For more information, please contact Michelle Brown, Special Education Director, at micbrown@dallasisd.org or 972-581-4343.
I created a Solar Eclipses website that you may share with teachers and students to make the most of this learning experience. It includes safety information, websites, videos, and lessons and activities (broken down by grade band and in English and Spanish) that you can use to plan for the total solar eclipse.
(ORIGINAL MESSAGE)
On Monday, April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will sweep across Texas and be observed in the DFW area. In an effort to provide students with a safe opportunity to view the eclipse, The Perot Museum of Nature and Science will provide all Dallas ISD students and staff with a free pair of solar viewing glasses. Dealey has already submitted our order for glasses for all staff and students. We are so excited about our Dealey Solar Eclipse Day!
Instructional Supports
The team at NASA’s Neurodiversity Network has recently developed an Eclipse Guide for Neurodiverse Learners in preparation for the eclipse. We are requesting that campus leaders share this information with teachers that work with students who have autism.

Upcoming SBDM Election Info
What does SBDM do?
Dealey’s Site-Based Decision Making Committee (SBDM) serves as an advisory council to the Principal. Every public school in Texas has an SBDM to help the Principal achieve school goals. The SBDM is comprised of the campus Principal, teachers, school staff, parents, and business/community representatives.
SBDM works with the Principal to address issues identified by the Principal in support of the Campus Improvement Plan. The Principal is responsible for and makes final decisions on the instructional and operational functions of the campus. But the SBDM is her partner in helping the school achieve success.
SBDM works with the Principal of several areas of school governance, including::
· Monitoring progress on Campus Needs Assessment/Campus Improvement Plan
· Academic progress
· Safety and Security
· Strategically marketing Dealey to existing and new families
· Ensuring community health and wellbeing (will focus on middle school next year)
· Diversity, equity, and inclusion
SBDM is a great opportunity to get directly involved in helping Dealey achieve great outcomes for our students and families.
Election Info
Parent, business, and community representative members of SBDM are elected by the Dealey parent base or are nominated by the Principal. There will be two openings, each serving a two-year term to commence on June 1st, 2024. If you would like to be added to the ballot, please fill out the online form at the web address below by April 5, 2024. The online election will run April 11-18, 2024.
