October 2022

From the Superintendent
Dear RUSD Community Member,
The start to the 2022-23 school year has been amazing. Thank you for all of your support and efforts in helping us to start the new year off on a positive note. The RUSD teachers, support staff and administration are enthusiastic and excited to be working with your student scholars.
The Board of Education and I continue to be focused on meeting all of the goals in our multiyear vision titled, RUSD 2025: Excellence for All Students. I am pleased to announce that we are already meeting many of the goals despite the interruptions created by the pandemic.
It is very rewarding as Superintendent to see the joy in our students every day as they are learning in our classrooms, being actively involved in extra-curricular activities and promoting the sense of community by their involvement in clubs. I encourage all parents and guardians to join your school PTA and help support the supplemental programs that make our learning environment for students robust. Again, thank you for your continued support of RUSD and your active involvement at the schools.
Respectfully,
Mauricio Arellano, Superintendent

2022-2023 Student Trustees
The Board of Education welcomed this year's Student Trustees. Students from each of our high schools applied for the Student Trust position at their school. A representative and an alternate from each site were selected through a screening and interview process. In collaboration with the Board Members, these students will represent their student population and provide their perspectives, ideas, concerns, and reactions to Board actions and policies.

Certificated and Classified Spotlights!
Certificated Staff Spotlight: Shannon Mazzulla and Justina Villarreal
What's the best part of teaching first grade? Teaching the same grade at the same school with your best friend! Meet Shannon Mazzulla and Justina Villarreal, Franklin Elementary School First Grade teachers. Ms. Mazulla and Ms. Villarreal knew they wanted to become teachers, because they enjoyed working with children. Their passion to educate and shape young minds continues to be at the forefront of everything they do.
In January 2020, they decided to create a joint Instagram account called "Sparkling in First," where they showcased all the amazing activities and events that were happening in their classrooms. "We wanted to give people a look into what students are learning," they shared. "We also wanted to shed some positivity in regards to education." Their account features many eye-catching pictures, including classroom decor inspiration, tips and resources, and inspiring teaching outfits.
Currently both teachers are working on many seasonal activities and crafts for their students. These hands-on activities include STEAM, heart words, fact fluency, and Google classroom resources.

Classified Staff Spotlight: Edwin (Eddie) Roque-Rivera
"The best part of my day is early in the morning when I go out to the front of the school to put up the flags," he shared. "After I raise the flags, I often find myself taking a minute to look at the school; and I get an overwhelming feeling of pride and joy just looking at our beautiful campus and knowing that I am part of Clement Middle School. I am filled with Viking pride!"
Fun Fact: Mr. Roque-Rivera is an avid comic book and comic-related memorabilia collector! Prior to working at the District, he owned a comic book shop for 10 years.

School Communications
Parent Communication: What to Expect
Staying informed is key to a smooth school year (for everyone!). Outlined below are ways the district as well as school sites will communicate with you.
District Communication
The district will send monthly newsletters, letters from the Superintendent, and updates through ParentSquare containing important information and various action items. By reading through the communication, you are helping your student(s) stay on top of any pressing issues, updates and information. ParentSquare is also an app you can download on your phone and set up your personal communication preferences. Seeing too many emails? You can adjust your notification preferences to digest mode and only receive one email from both your child(ren)'s school and the district in one readers digest format (click here to see how!). You can also enable text and push notifications (which we recommend in case of emergency).
In an effort to effectively and efficiently communicate with our staff, families, and community members, the Redlands Unified School District has adopted an electronic flyer communication tool, Peachjar. If you have any questions regarding this new digital flyer service, please email peachjar@redlands.k12.ca.us
The district also uses social media to share positive stories and happenings throughout the district, in addition to important dates and reminders. You can follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn!
School Site Communication
School site communication varies depending on site and grade level. However, all sites will send out either weekly or monthly newsletter-style communication through ParentSquare. For questions related to school site communication, please reach out to the site directly!
