Student(s) of the Month were nominated by their peers for demonstrating this trait during the month!
Counselor's Corner with Ms. Serenity
It has been so awesome to see your children’s smiling faces in their classrooms, in the lunchroom and out on the playground! The excitement of a new school year is upon us and this is going to be a great school year!
In D51, our school counselors follow the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) model of school counseling to help our kids reach their full potential. This model of best practices for school counselors is a multi-tiered system that supports every student through classroom guidance lessons on empathy, managing emotions, coping strategies, problem solving skills and how to learn, study and plan for the future. These are skills that help students in the classroom and in life. I am proud to offer direct instruction in these skills for all students at Taylor Elementary through monthly lessons.
For students who need a little extra practice to master these vital skills, we offer small groups. On August 23, we started our first grief group of the year for our students who have been impacted by loss. If you would like your child to join this group, please contact me by September 6 so that we can add your child before the group gets too far along. Later this month, we will offer a Calm Ninjas group for our students who need help with emotional regulation or finding their calm during these hectic days. If you think your child would be a good fit for this group, let me know ASAP. You can reach me anytime at:serenity@d51schools.org or (970)254-4870 ext 63100.
If you have any questions about the school counseling program at Taylor Elementary, please feel free to email or call anytime! I will be presenting to parents on September 14 at 4:15 pm at the PTO meeting and all are welcome! Families are also welcome to schedule a time to help with a lesson or just come hang out to see what your children are mastering through our comprehensive school counseling program.
A Word from Principal Wilson
Dear Taylor Families,
It’s crazy to think that it is already September! I appreciated having the opportunity to meet many students and families at our back-to-school night. It’s wonderful to have students within the building and we are so excited to start the ‘23-’24 school year with each of you.
During back-to-school night, we asked families to answer one question, “What values and/or traits do you want your student to embody when they leave Taylor?” We will be asking our students a similar question in September, then compile all of our responses to help us modify or craft a new mission and vision statement.
Building a strong school and classroom community is vital to students feeling safe and ready to learn each day. Our staff has implemented Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) within their classrooms and around the building. For example, we have common expectations for all learners (and adults) within the hallways and cafeteria.
In addition to teachers building strong classroom communities, they have also been working diligently to implement our new reading curriculum and wrapping up their beginning of year assessments. Teachers will use these assessments in the coming weeks to pull small groups and differentiate instruction as needed for students. We are so lucky to have such an amazing group of hard-working teachers at Taylor!
Towards the end of September, we will be hosting a walk-a-thon in our back field to help our PTO raise funds for technology (aquos boards) in the classrooms. More information will be distributed in Thursday folders very soon and through messenger. We look forward to a fun day with our students!
As always, please reach out if you have any questions.
Respectfully,
Shawn Wilson
Taylor Principal
