The following is a true story from a Lakeville . . . . .
First teacher: "Go-to sub?"
Second teacher: "Meatball parm."
First teacher: "Okay, you and I are going to be friends, but I meant go-to substitute teacher."
Strategies and tools you can use - Intentional Language
Asking the students to fold a piece of paper using a 'hot-dog fold' is cute, but it doesn't advance their mathematical vocabulary. Try, "Fold your piece of paper along the longest line of symmetry." What kind of fold will they get if you ask them to "Fold your paper along the shortest line of symmetry"?
Incorporate content within your call and response strategies. "I say, 'sum' and you say, 'total'."
"I say, 'verb' and you say, ' action words'." Etc.
Vocabulary is the foundation for comprehension. Depending on the student, it can take between 4 and 40 exposures to a new word in context before it is learned. Being intentional with your language while teaching vocabulary in context will benefit all students.
