EHMS Connections Newsletter #29
March 31, 2025
Dear East Hills Family,
We are so incredibly proud of our East Hills family! This little message would not be enough to tell you everything, so take a minute to scroll down to see some amazing things happening here because of your terrific children! We love that our teachers and students can share these amazing opportunities!
Thank you for all of your support, we know that you are the reason for the success of these outstanding students!! Report cards are coming soon. Although, we offer extra help, retests, and reteaching, we also expect a lot from the students in terms of effort and attention. We know that all students have the ability to get good grades, but we all know they need to put in the effort. To work in tandem with you will take care of anything else they might need!
We hope everyone enjoyed the warm weather on Saturday! We look forward to many more of these terrific days as spring unfolds.

The STEM girls and Mrs. Graner!!
Mrs. Graner took four amazing 6th grade young ladies to the CHOICES day at Lehigh University. The students participated in lots of STEM activities and represented East Hills very well! This program offers middle school girls the opportunity to engage in a wide range of engineering fields and science experiments to enhance their interests in the field of STEM.
Mrs. Calario and the WSCAM team!
Justin, Morgan and Leo represented East Hills with an amazing video created out of connecting with a Lehigh Valley manufacturer. The students interviewed employees, learned about the company compiling video and photo files. They used all that they learned to make an outstanding video! Mrs. Calario was right by them coaching them and encouraging their amazing efforts!

All Bethlehem Area School District schools will be closed on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, for Primary Election Day.
6th Grade students in World Languages and parents
It's time to select your World Language course preference for 7th and 8th grade. Students and parents can follow the instructions in the email (sent on Friday, 3/28) with a Google Form in Schoology from World Language teachers. Students can also complete the ranking on Monday, 3/31 and Tuesday, 4/1 during their World Language class, where teachers will guide them through the process. IMPORTANT: Students will remain in the same language for both 7th and 8th grade (no rotations). This is equivalent to a high school Level 1 course split into Part 1 (7th) and Part 2 (8th). World Language teachers recommend that students and parents discuss language preferences before ranking. If you have any concerns or questions, please reach out to your child's World Language teacher.

Put Down the Phone and….
You have tried setting boundaries, doing the screen time challenge by tracking hours, and still, the kids are on their devices. What's next? There are several more options to consider limiting screen time. Click here to see LVHN's article about limiting screen time and effects on health. Did you know that doctors recommend adolescents should limit their time to no more than two hours a day? What are the alternatives?
Limit phone time to only after sports or other outdoor/social activities. (Bike weather is here!)
Lock phones away at bedtime.
Remove televisions / screens from children's bedrooms.
Have you considered the flip phone? If your biggest concern is not being able to get in touch with your child, the flip phone can give you that peace of mind.
For reliable resources, visit Common Sense Media. Here is a link to their full report: "A Week in the Life of Young Adolsecent's Smart Phone Use". If you have tips and tricks that you would like to share with our families, please submit your suggestions to clouw@basdschools.org. Thank you, and happy parenting!

CELL PHONES!!
New for 2024-25
Summer is coming to a close and often we neglect to realize many of the changes the students will need to become accustomed to when school starts. Waking up early, preparing to catch the bus or travel to school, schoolwork, homework, and the list goes on.
One major area to consider is that your children will not have the same access to their cell phones when they become students again.
Parents, please prepare your child(ren) for the adjustment. Most parents have limitations they set for their children throughout the summer days to limit screen time. However, all of the students and you as parents need to know that we are adjusting our standards for the upcoming school year. We looked back on the level of distraction vs. usefulness cell phones have provided over the past few years and we realize the need to set a tone for the school day to be largely void of the distractions of cell phones. Here is what you should prepare your child(ren) for when they return to school:
Students may not CARRY phones in hands, pockets, etc. Cell phones must not be out at all. They must remain in bags during the school day. This means:
Students can never use cell phones in class, hallway or office without teacher/staff permission.
Students can never carry cell phones in hand in the hallway.
Students can never take cellphones to/in the lavatory.
Students can never take cell phones to the cafeteria (not in purses/lunch bags if those items are brought to the cafe).
***Smart watches have similar restricted use in all the same ways as cell phones. Smart watches can and will be collected if used inappropriately.
