The Grizzly News
January - 2025
From the Principal
Happy New Year to you all! I hope that you and your family have enjoyed the break. While it has been nice, I cannot wait to greet your students on Monday, January 6th when school resumes.
It is hard to believe we are already half way through the school year. We have done some amazing things here at GLS and I know the rest of the year will be just as wonderful.
Before break, we were able to hold our first karaoke assembly where students & staff were had the opportunity to showcase their singing (and piano) abilities. We were also able to welcome Hope, our new therapy dog to the building for her first visit. Thank you to all of our families for getting the permission slips back so quickly so students could participate. I have included photos of these and many more activities from the month of December below.
As always, thank you for entrusting your student with us every day and please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or ideas for the GLS community!

😎 Great Moments from the Month
SAB students took a mobility trip to Gurnee Mills where they completed a scavenger hunt and practiced money and communication skills.
Students lined the halls as they celebrated one student's last day at GLS before transitioning back to his home district.
We were the recipient of a generous donation of school supplies from the Abbott disABILITY Network!
Hope, our therapy dog, made her debut on Friday, December 20th where she was able to walk the building and meet some of the Grizzly family!
Staff were celebrated with daily surprises for the last week of 2024. Breakfast and a popcorn bar (pictured) were among the offerings.
Karaoke had everyone up and singing!
December Highlights
SEDOL S.T.A.R.S. student - Tyler Murphy
Every month, the Executive Board takes time to recognize a S.T.A.R.S student. This stands for Students Taking Academic Responsibility Seriously. The S.T.A.R.S. student for the month of December was Tyler Murphy. Tyler is a student in Ms. Smith's class at GLS. He was recognized due to his positive performance both academically and behaviorally. Way to go Tyler!
SEDOL Employee of the Month
In addition to celebrating our S.T.A.R.S. student at the December board meeting, our very own Jamal Patterson was recognized as the SEDOL December Employee of the Month. Mr. Patterson teaches physical education and adapted physical education at GLS. He was nominated by his fellow educators due to his "hard-working, encouraging, kind, and inspiring" personality which positively affects both staff and students. We are lucky to have him on staff here at GLS.
An Introduction to Federal & State Benefits in Illinois
This opportunity is for families of students with cognitive disabilities and/or Autism of all ages.
The presentation will help families gain insights, tools, and support to help their loved ones thrive!
For over 70 years, The Arc of Illinois has been advocating with people with disabilities, families, and community organizations to make Illinois a place where people with disabilities can live, work, learn, play, and love in communities across the state. They believe people with disabilities should be full participants in community life, and they offer families and individuals the information, resources, family support, and training needed to reach their goals.
