Before Care and After Care π
Our students who attend Before Care and After Care have lots of fun playing games, socializing with their peers, doing their homework and enjoying the outside. If you are interested in having your child attend, there are still spaces available in our After Care program only. Please contact Lisa Carlon at carlon_lisa@mybps.us for more information.
Bee Celebrations π
Each month at Centerville Elementary School, our students and staff learn about and practice a new "bee" skill both inside and outside of the classroom. Students earn "bees" when demonstrating that particular skill and we have a school wide assembly at the end of the month to celebrate. Our "bee" skill from September was being Respectful, and October's "bee" skill is being Positive. Check out the pictures from our September Bee Celebration.
October is Fire Prevention Month π
Our second grade classes got a visit from COMM firefighters Shawn Lehane and Tim Booth to discuss fire safety. They will be visiting several times throughout the school year to do lessons with our second graders.
News from Room 20 π
Here are pictures of Monarch butterflies that came from Mrs. Chamsarian's garden. She brought in baby caterpillars to school and the second and third graders watched them eat lots and lots of milkweed, fatten up, climb to the top of the habitat and hang in a "J", before turning into a beautiful chrysalis. We have had lots of great questions over the last few weeks, and a ton of interested faces peeking in the window at them on their way to and from their classrooms throughout the day. On Friday October 11th, the last two butterflies were release (the first two had to be brought home to be released due to the rainy weather). Second grade released the first one in the morning, which flew to the edge of the building and hung out for a bit. The second one flew right to Ms. Forbes' hand, and then a student had an opportunity to hold it before it fluttered off. It was an amazing experience to witness!
News from the Hive π
We always encourage students to name their feelings, and welcome all feelings. We also want our students to know how loved, strong and capable they are. We posted "feelings on the fly" outside of the hive as a reminder to stay attuned to your body, mind and heart. In case the hive team is busy, you can always stop and reset with these positive reminders.
S.E.L. Strategy of the Month π
We here at Centerville Elementary School believe that developing social emotional skills is an essential component to a child's education. Each month we will provide you with a strategy to share at home to practice with your child. Our first strategy to share revolves around problem solving. When children are experiencing "big emotions" or are expressing their emotions in a way that can be hurtful to others, it is difficult to discuss how they could react differently in the moment. Taking a few minutes during the day to problem solve using social stories or discussing the difference between a "small", "medium" or "big" problem will help students remember the choices they can make when they are in those situations. Taking the time to discuss these conflicts may be helpful for children who are able to recognize a problem, but need guidance for approaching the problem with a peaceful solution.
CKLA is A-OK! π
Both students and staff are enjoying exploring and navigating the CKLA language arts curriculum. Here are some photos of some of the end of unit special events from first, second and third grade. Check them out below.
News from the Health Office π
We are talking with students about healthy choices and handwashing this month. We are encouraging them to eat the colors of the rainbow and to get outside with all this beautiful weather we have been having lately. Hand hygiene remains one of the most important ways to stop the spread of illnesses if families can continue to encourage this at home, washing for as long as you can sing the Happy Birthday song. In addition, thinking about other ways they can BEE healthy in their daily life.
Polished Dental will be coming to school for their first visit this year on November 6th, if you are interested in a cleaning and havenβt signed up yet, please reach out and we will send home the information.
Please remember to pack extra clothes in your students backpack in addition to an extra pair of underwear, pants, and a shirt. We are running low on pants, so if you have any gently used pants of all sizes we would greatly appreciate the donation to the health office.
Please see attached photos of our hydroponic garden, as we just planted arugula, kale, and summer crisp lettuce that will be ready to eat in our cafe in the middle of November that the students will help us harvest.
News from P.E π
Our students are enjoying climbing on our brand new traverse wall in their P.E. classes. Check out these photos.
News from the PTAπ
Safety Reminder π
Please make sure that when you are dropping off at school in the morning, children remain in your vehicle until 8:50. While you are waiting your car should be turned off, children should be inside, not be sitting or hanging outside of car windows. A reminder, whenever a vehicle is moving, children should be securely buckled in their seat. We want to keep everyone safe during this very busy time.
