NEWS FROM AROUND IBWHS
Community Care Day - Rescheduled for THIS SATURDAY!
Our Community Care Day has been rescheduled for this Saturday, Sept. 7th from 9 - Noon! Bring your garden tools, garden gloves and help us spruce up our landscape! Remember the saying "many hands make light work"! With many members of the community showing up, together we can make our campus look great in a short period of time! Thanks!
Morning Drop-Off
If at all possible, please do not use the Vermont Street parking lot as a drop-off location. Some of our staff have been "trapped" in the non-moving circle not being able to reach their parking spot. Use the side streets near the school to drop off your student. Or as an alternative, please use the turn-around on the north side of the school. Thank you!
IBWHS Food Pantry
Please help our IBW community by restocking our food pantry!
A few of the many ways our social worker Britni supports kids and their families is by managing a food pantry as well as giving out snacks to help kids get through the day. You can place an on-line order to be delivered directly to the school, or do your own shopping to be dropped on the coordinator's porch anytime. Details in the link. Feel free to use your own judgement about what you purchase, if you see other items you think would be helpful to families. Thanks for any help you can offer to our community! volunteersignup.org/C4LJ7
Seeking Main Office Volunteers During the School Year
Thank you to everyone who has already stepped up to volunteer in the Main Office! We have just a couple of shifts still available (listed below) to help us answer phones and field questions that come to the main office. In addition, this volunteer position may also support Kathy Lommen with attendance. If you are interested in learning more about this volunteer opportunity, please email Erica Caldwell at ecaldwell@pps.net
Monday: 12:00- 3:00pm
Thursday: 12:00 - 3:00pm
Seeking IBW Career Speakers & Pathway Partners
Did you know that Ida B Wells HS offers career pathways in Construction, Engineering, Computer Science, Health Sciences, Education, Marketing, Art & Design, Journalism, Sound Engineering, and Theater Production?
Engaging students in career learning is central to these Career Technical Education programs, as well as AVID and 9th grade College & Career Exploration classes at Ida B Wells. If you are interested in serving as a guest presenter or contributing your professional knowledge and inspiring our students this year, please complete one of these forms:
Seeking Volunteers for the College and Career Center
As we approach the start of the school year and beginning of the College Application process, we would like to extend an invitation to volunteer in the Ida B. Wells College and Career Center! Ida B. Wells High School is looking for dedicated volunteers to support our efforts in the College and Career Center. This is a weekly commitment of 1-2 hours mentoring seniors along their college journey! No experience is required!
We are currently seeking dedicated volunteers to assist in the following areas:
- Essay Editing: Helping students refine and perfect their college application essays.
- College Search Assistance: Guiding students in finding colleges that best match their interests and goals.
- Application Support: Offering help with various aspects of the college application process to ensure students submit their best work.
Your experience and expertise could make a significant difference in our students' college journeys. If you are interested in volunteering, please fill out the volunteer form at your earliest convenience: Volunteer Form.
Thank you for considering this opportunity to support our students. Your involvement will not only benefit them but also strengthen our school community.
Background Check required for Volunteering
If you plan to volunteer in any capacity (field trips, main office, college and career center, library ect.), please get a background check through security services. It is an very simple form to complete and once you are cleared, the clearance lasts for 3 year.
Here is the link to get cleared: https://apps.raptortech.com/Apply/MjY3ODplbi1VUw==
Attendance Reporting
We have an easy attendance reporting system in place at IBWHS! However, please keep in mind that our high school is like a small city. With a population of over 1600 students, there are 50-100 students each and every day that have appointments, early releases, family emergencies, sick days, etc, etc. and we need everyone to do their part to make it all work smoothly. Please review all our procedures on our webpage: https://www.pps.net/Domain/6916. The Table of Contents of the Attendance page is below. Five key points are:
FULL-DAY ABSENCES
Report full-day absences that are either day of or future through ParentVUE
PARTIAL-DAY ABSENCES
Report all partial-day absences through the IBW Absence Reporting Form.
STUDENTS (EVEN 18 YEAR OLDS) MUST BE EXCUSED TO LEAVE CLASS
With enough prior notice, the Absence Reporting Form can be used to alert us that a student needs to be called out of class. Use this form in advance to avoid having to park and come into the building to sign out your student!!
ALL ABSENCES MUST BE EXCUSED WITHIN 72 HOURS
-Parents/guardians (students are not permitted) must excuse absences within 72 hours. We are no longer permitted to go back in time beyond 72 hours and excuse an absence; it will remain unexcused.
NEW! ROBOTEXTS
The district is sending RoboTexts this year using Remind. They are sent out at 12:30PM and 4:30PM based on information in Synergy 5 minutes prior. Please note that texts going out are missing the st, rd, th, etc. from 3rd period, 4th period, etc. We hope to see that change soon!
News from our Nurse
Out of respect for our community, please have your student stay home if you they are feeling ill. For complete information regarding communicable diseases and when to stay home, what is excludable symptoms, etc. please see the attached district information. Communicable Disease Guidance for Schools

Meet the Candidates Ice Cream Social
Meet the Candidates Ice Cream Social
Monday, September 23
Hillsdale Food Park
5:30-7:00 PM
The Hillsdale News and SW Trails PDX are pleased to host an opportunity for voters to meet candidates for the three District 4 city council seats on the Fall ballot.
This free event will be held at the Hillsdale Food Park on Monday, September 23, from 5:30 to 7:00 PM. The Food Park is located in Hillsdale at 6238 SW Capitol Hwy, near the north entrance to Ida B. Wells High School at the corner of SW Sunset Blvd and SW Capitol Highway. The food carts will be open until 7:30 PM. The format is an informal meet-and-greet with ice cream treats provided courtesy of Basics Market.
With more than 20 candidates on the ballot for the three Portland District 4 city council seats and two new ranked choice voting methods used, voters face a steep learning curve. In an effort to help voters connect to candidates, Valeurie Friedman (Hillsdale News) and Don Baack (founder of SWTrails PDX) have invited District 4 candidates to come meet area residents where we live and tell us about themselves and their plans for City Council.
This is also an opportunity for voters in Hillsdale and other non-downtown SW neighborhoods to communicate their concerns and priorities to their future representatives.
Get your ranked choice voting questions answered—A representative of the city’s Government Transition Advisory Committee will be on hand with sample ballots and educational information on ranked choice voting.
All District 4 candidates have been invited, with 12 currently confirmed to attend.
The event is sponsored by Hillsdale News, SW Trails PDX, the Hillsdale Food Park, Basics Market, and Symbiosis Printing.
You can find additional info and updates at https://www.hillsdalenewspdx.com/candidate-meet-and-greet.
