Principal's Corner

Dr. Kiena Hughley
Principal of Barack Obama Elementary School
November 1, 2024
Dear Obama Family,
As part of our ongoing commitment to the safety and well-being of our students and staff, we will be conducting a Cold Red Drill throughout the school year. This drill is an essential part of our school’s emergency preparedness plan, allowing our students and staff to practice protocols in the event of a lockdown due to external threats.
During a Cold Red Drill:
• All students and staff will practice securing the classroom or designated area.
• Lights will be turned off, and everyone will remain quiet.
• Staff will review safety protocols with students, ensuring they understand the importance of following directions during an emergency.
Please make sure that your contact information is up to date. You can do this by completing Final Forms. Make sure to sign digitally at the end to submit.

National Native American Heritage Month
November is National American Indian Heritage Month. “National American Indian Heritage Month celebrates and recognizes the accomplishments of the peoples who were the original inhabitants, explorers, and settlers of the United States” 1
“What started at the turn of the century as an effort to gain a day of recognition for the significant contributions the first Americans made to the establishment and growth of the U.S., has resulted in a whole month being designated for that purpose.
One of the very proponents of an American Indian Day was Dr. Arthur C. Parker, a Seneca Indian, who was the director of the Museum of Arts and Science in Rochester, N.Y. He persuaded the Boy Scouts of America to set aside a day for the “First Americans” and for three years they adopted such a day. In 1915, the annual Congress of the American Indian Association meeting in Lawrence, Kans., formally approved a plan concerning American Indian Day. It directed its president, Rev. Sherman Coolidge, an Arapahoe, to call upon the country to observe such a day. Coolidge issued a proclamation on Sept. 28, 1915, which declared the second Saturday of each May as an American Indian Day and contained the first formal appeal for recognition of Indians as citizens.
In 1990 President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 “National American Indian Heritage Month.” Similar proclamations, under variants on the name (including “Native American Heritage Month” and “National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month”) have been issued each year since 1994.” 2l
Executive and Legislative Documents
The Law Library of Congress has compiled guides to commemorative observations, including a comprehensive inventory of the Public Laws, Presidential Proclamations and congressional resolutions related to Native American Heritage Month.

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proactive approach to teach expected behavior. PBIS at Obama provides positive social skills, appropriate communication strategies, and incorporates restorative practices. PBIS is set up with three tiers of support.
Obama Mustangs had a blast participating in our Q1 PBIS school wide reward, SILLY OLYMPICS. Each class set out to achieve their quarter one horseshoe goal. The students had the opportunity to earn horseshoes as a class when following expectations or going above and beyond with positive behavior in all areas of the school. Our next PBIS incentive will be a school wide Dodgeball Tournament on Friday, December 20th.
Starting November 1st students will have the opportunity to participate in Brain Breaks and Cool Down activities. Brain Breaks and Cool down activities are short, structured activities to assist students in refocusing in the classroom. These activities include seated/chair-assisted movement breaks, standing movement breaks, and guided breathing/meditation techniques. Brain breaks are important because they allow students to reset and recharge. Cool down activities are beneficial because they prepare students to transition back into the classroom setting appropriately.

CASEL and SEL at Obama
The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) is an organization that works to bring high quality standards to social and emotional learning. The organization has identified 5 major focuses of SEL instruction: self-management, responsible decision making, relationship skills, social-awareness, and self-awareness. Many of the activities and lessons that students receive include many of these focuses in one lesson.
Self-Awareness
Self-management is the ability to recognize one’s emotions and values. Using this recognition, we’re able to understand how our emotions influence our thoughts, actions, and choices. Students may learn about this by learning to identify one’s emotions, personal and social identities, and their personal and cultural assets. Self-awareness focuses on demonstrating honesty, linking our thoughts and feelings, developing personal interests, and having a growth mindset.
Additional Resources:
Some easy ways to build self-awareness include reading positive affirmations, making a gratitude list, doing an emotions check-in, writing self-compliments, and writing in a journal!
If you’d like to know more about the work that the Wellness & PBIS team and its partners are doing, you can check out our website here. You will find information and details about all the wellness initiatives occurring both at the district level and here at Barack Obama Elementary! If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to me (juliana.wilder@mapleschools.com)!
