September 2023 Newsletter

Welcome Back to School!

All kids matter, are important, and can grow socially, emotionally, and academically.

It has been a great start here at OMS! The building is full of energy, laughter, and learning and it is all so wonderful! We are settling into new routines and schedules, getting to know each other, and digging into curriculum.

If you were here for orientation or open house, hopefully you noticed the Chieftain Pride posters around the building. Our building has many aspects that pivot around what it means to have Chieftain Pride: Perseverance Respect, Integrity, Dependability, and Excellence. This hex's focus is on dependability--doing what's right even when no one is watching. Each week, our staff takes time to reflect on students who have demonstrated dependability in any school environment. Those who stand out earn a note from a teacher and are entered into a drawing.

In addition, we will start our Pride Privilege Cards this week. Hex 1 students have earned their cards for earning 2.5s or higher in core classes and 2s or higher in encore classes from last year's hex 6 report cards. For Hex 2-6, students will fill out an application. Again, students have a grade requirement, but they also have a behavior expectation. In addition, students need to show they are involved or connected to our community in some way. That could be through an extra curricular activity or volunteering. Students earning a Pride Privilege Card get to go early to lunch each day as well as have their names in drawings and/or earn rewards at school parties. More to come later!

We will still continue with Students of the Hex, but each hex will be focused on the Chieftain Pride focus area and one standout will be highlighted per grade.

If you have not done so yet, please pay the following:

*$8 Activity Fee (check memo: Activity Fee)

*Lunch Money (put into provided envelope) (can be done online)

*$35 Device Protection Plan (DPP) (family cap is $105) (check memo: DPP) (one family can be in one check) (can be done online)

*$20 Yearbook (check memo: Yearbook)

Please write a SEPARATE CHECK for each item above. Fees go into separate accounts, which is why it is important that they are separate checks and/or the correct change is provided.

OMS Drop Off and Pick Up

Another friendly reminder about our after school safety flow:

All vehicles drop off and pick up at the main entrance. Only buses drop off and pick up at the pool doors. Use the "overflow" loop in the shared parking lot if there is a line.

AFTER SCHOOL SAFETY FLOW: Only buses should use the bus exit. Everyone else will be directed to use the four-way stop closest to OHS if they are not picking up a student at the OMS front doors. This flow is all for safety purposes.

Fall Assessments

NWEA MAP

In the next two weeks, our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will all take the Fall Math and Reading MAPS assessment. These assessments will help us learn more real-time academic information for each student and will help us create intentional groups to help us grow each student in our Thrive groups.

Below is some information for you as a family to learn more about MAP. After the assessment, we will mail home results.

Homecoming 2023 Information

Friday, September 29th

Homecoming 2023 is scheduled for Friday, September 29! The Chieftain Outpost is once again providing students at OES, OIS and OMS an opportunity to purchase some new Chieftain gear for the game!

Youth Basketball

Registration is still open!

Osceola youth basketball is available to all boys and girls entering 3-8 grade for the upcoming school year. The focus of the program is to provide skill development and basketball knowledge in a team oriented environment.

Again this season we will be utilizing online registration and payment. If your child is interested in participating, please visit: https://www.osceolabasketball.com to complete the registration process.

Registration Fees:
● 3rd Grade - Free
● 4th Grade - $50
● 5th - 8th Grades - $100 annually

Join us on Saturday, September 23 at 7:30 pm for the first annual LIGHT UP THE NIGHT 5K WALK/RUN to bring light, support, and awareness to mental health and suicide prevention.
