Milford School Property Stakeholder Meeting
Last Wednesday, we gathered with Milford's community leaders—including the Town Clerk and representatives from the youth league and local businesses—to discuss the upcoming building project. We talked about how this project will affect current facilities and explored future opportunities for development, particularly around the northwest area near the sports fields. Elevatus Architecture collected everyone's input to draft new design ideas. We're planning to hold a community meeting soon to discuss our long-term vision for the site and explore ways to fund this exciting project. Stay tuned!
Starting a Movement
Last month Wawasee Middle School took a group of teachers to the Starting a Movement conference, which focuses on improving culture in a Professional Learning Community. One of the key speakers, Tom Hierck, was particularly influential and we have since booked Tom to come and work with our building leadership teams at the end of May. We are excited about the information that he is going to share with representatives of the whole district as we continue to empower leadership teams to positively impact their schools.
Message from Dr. Wilfong
Literacy Endorsement
Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) passed a new law effective July 1, that any teacher holding a k-6 license will need to obtain their literacy endorsement. This includes 80 hours of synchronies training and retaking the Praxis Exam. Teachers that fail to accomplish these tasks will not be able to renew their license.
Kindergarten Readiness Assessment (KRA)
Indiana Department of Education (IDOEA) has announced they have completed the Kindergarten Readiness Assessment. This is an assessment given to all students entering kindergarten state wide. Schools will have the option to opt in for the '24 - '25 school year, but will be required starting the fall of '25. WCSC is considering the opt in option to allow our staff and students a chance to prepare before the required time.
Assessment Report
Spring is often considered, "test season" for our students per the IDOE requirements. At this time, our high school has completed their PSAT and SAT assessments along with our second and third grade students completing their IRead assessment in March. Scores have been released to families of those students, but are embargoed for the district. We predict those scores being released in the next month. Currently, our third through eighth grades students are taking ILEARN. It will be several months before these scores are available to families or the schools. Our students and staff work hard all year long to prepare for these state benchmarks. We are confident our students will score well.
Good News
Wawasee Virtual Academy Graduates
One of the benefits of the pandemic for our district has been the robust virtual acadmey that has been designed at Wawasee. This program continues to grow and educates students state wide. This spring 15 Wawasee students graduated from the Wawasee Virtual Academy. Nine completed their studies in the first semester. These students completed their high school careers online and deserve a huge congratulations from our community.
