ACADEMY ADVENTURES MIDTOWN
BUILDING ON STRENGTHS & FILLING BUCKETS!
We have completed our first 40 days of school! I do not know about you, but I sure think the time flew by! We are quickly approaching the end of our 1st Quarter!
Academy Adventures Midtown has worked hard this year to make many positive changes throughout the school. We continue to prioritize your child's academics and social emotional health. Aside from helping our students become confident, excited learners, we want to create a school and learning environment that is supportive for the students AND their families. Being such a small school, we have the opportunity to build a close, supportive environment where students feel safe and parents know that their child is safe when they are here.
Students are working hard in the classroom and learning a lot of new skills. It is so wonderful to walk through the building and watch the students engaged in their work, helping each other learn and becoming confident and happy students. We are using the results from the beginning of the year benchmark assessments in the classroom to help build on each child's individual strengths so that they are getting the help they need to be and feel successful. Results from the benchmark assessment are available to you through Renaissance. If you need help accessing them, please reach out to Miss Denise.
Thank you to all of our families for your continues support. We are very proud of the academic environment we are building at Academy Adventures Midtown and we could not do it without the support of our families. Please never hesitate to reach out to me if you have questions, suggestions and/or concerns. The quickest and easiest way to reach me is through Class Dojo or in the mornings at drop off.
❔Who Should I Ask?❔
Academy Adventures Midtown is a small school, with a small staff. Many of the staff members wear multiple hats! Sometimes it is hard to know who to go to so you get the answers you are looking for. Below is a quick reference to help guide you to the correct person!
Absences: You can send a message through Class Dojo or call the school at (520) 777-3757
Questions on Homework/Classwork/Missed Work from Absences: Miss Denise
Questions on Behavior in the Classroom: Miss Denise
Questions on Behavior in General: Miss Denise or Mrs. Angela
Questions on Enrollment: Mrs. Angela or Ms. Lia
Questions on Processes/Procedures in the School: Mrs. Angela
Concerns in the Classroom: Miss Denise
Concerns not being addressed: Mrs. Angela
If you have specific questions about your child, even if something as simple as how did they do today, please do not address that with anyone other than Miss Denise. That should not be questions asked of Ms. Lia, Ms. Rubi or Miss Yesenia. It is very important that those questions are directed to the teacher and/or Mrs. Angela. Staff has been asked not to have those discussions with parents since it is not part of their duties. We strongly recommend that you make an appointment with Miss Denise if you have concerns.
If you have a question not listed above, please speak with Mrs. Angela, and if she is not available please ask to speak with Miss Denise or Mr. Jack. For the quickest response please send Mrs. Angela a message in Class Dojo. Due to many meetings and responsibilities that is often the way she can respond the fastest.
Our door is always open. Your feedback, concerns, suggestions are always welcome and encouraged. You are welcome to come observe at any time in the classroom. We are here for the students and will do all we can to make this a positive and safe learning environment. Never hesitate to reach out.
Attendance is crucial to your child's academic success. Your child cannot learn, if they are not here! Academy Adventures Midtown understands that sometimes things are out of our control and your child may be late and/or absent. As a school, we are more than happy to work with you. However, the increased unexcused absences and tardies are concerning. A few things to keep in mind:
- Students are required a specific number of instructional minutes daily by state law. If your child is late, this could result in an absence due to the missing instructional minutes. Your child showing up at school sometime during the school day, does not mean they are counted as present.
- Students who show up late miss the most critical part of the day, core curriculum instruction. The morning is the time that students receive instruction from their teacher that sets up the rest of their day. It is crucial that they are here for that instruction so they do not fall behind.
- Students who regularly arrive late disrupt the learning of the entire classroom. It also makes it very difficult for the child to focus on their work.
- Students who arrive late, miss breakfast and are often hungry and that makes it very hard for them to focus.
Please have your children at school daily and on time! Help your child be successful in school. This also goes for taking your child out early. Missed minutes, whether in the morning or afternoon, often result in absences and lower grades.
If you have questions regarding your child's attendance and how it is affecting their learning, please contact Miss Denise.
HELP US GROW!
Academy Adventures Midtown is looking to grow our enrollment. We will continue to keep our school small. We feel that we are able to make a bigger difference in each child's education when the population is small.
With that said, we also need to make sure we have enough students to operate! We are slowly growing, which is so exciting, but we would love to enroll another 5-10 students this year. It will enable us to ensure we have enough staffing to continue to provide each child with their individualized learning.
We have incentives for the families to enroll and for those families who refer students who enroll. If you know anyone in grades K-5, please recommend they come check us out! What better way to grow the school than with recommendations from our current families!
We appreciate your continued support!
Dear Families,
I want to take a moment to share some highlights from our learning journey this month.
Thank you for attending the curriculum meeting and conferences. It was wonderful to meet all of you. If you were unable to meet for conferences, I have reached out to reschedule.
A friendly reminder that school begins at 8:15 AM. It is important for students to arrive on time and ready to start their day.
I want to take a moment to share some highlights from our learning journey this month.
In Math, our lower elementary students are focusing on numbers, number words, and addition. Meanwhile, our upper elementary learners are diving into place value, exploring numbers up to 1,000 in standard, expanded, and word forms.
In Reading, our lower elementary students are working on letters, sounds, and CVC words to enhance their reading and writing skills. Our upper elementary class is engaged with informational texts, honing their comprehension strategies.
In Social Studies, we've been excited to learn about the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the contributions of Sandra Day O'Connor. We also learned about Johnny Appleseed (John Chapman).
In Science, the Humane Society of Southern Arizona visited our classroom, and the students were captivated by their work with animals, including how to care for dogs and cats.
Thank you for your continued support in your child's education. Together, we are fostering a love for learning!
Academy Adventures Midtown was selected as one of the school that the Humane Society of Southern Arizona has partnered with to bring education into the classroom about responsible pet ownership. We had our first presentation on September 24th! The students were divided into two groups and had age appropriate activities. Below are some pictures from their visit.
Our next visit is in October. We will also have visits in November and December. After the first of the year, we will have an opportunity for the 3rd-5th grade students to go visit the animals at the Humane Society.
This is another great way for our students to learn about their community!
THANK YOU FOR JOINING US!
September was a fun month for families! Thank you to everyone who attended our special Curriculum Info and Lunch, National Pizza & International Dot Day, and Parent Teacher Conferences! For families who were unable to join us for the Curriculum Info, a link to the slides as well as a PDF copy of the slides is below. If you have any questions, please be sure to contact Miss Denise!
Check out some pictures below from our fun events. Our goal is to have at least one family event per month. If you have any ideas for a family event, please let us know! We would love to have your input!
📱 SCHOOL COMMUNICATION📱
Please make sure that you have notifications enabled on your Class Dojo app. We ask that you respect our time and do not send message on weekends or between the hours of 8:00 PM-7:00 AM on Monday-Friday, unless there is an emergency. You can also comment on School Story Posts and Events anytime. We will respond as soon as possible.
If you have any issues with Class Dojo, please contact the school. Please note, you are NOT required to pay for Class Dojo. We only use the free portion. The paid version is optional and not required.
Health and Safety of our students, staff and families is always a priority. As the cold and flu season picks up, we are making a conscious effort to frequently wipe down highly touched surfaces during the day and at night.
If your child is exhibiting signs of illness (excessive coughing, congestion, upset stomach, etc.) we will contact parents/guardians to pick the child up. If a child is picked up, they are required to stay home the 48 hours with no symptoms, unless you obtain a note from a doctor saying it is safe for them to return. All this information can be found in the Student Family Handbook you received at registration.
For the safety of the students, we do keep the side gates and front door locked. The side gate is open ONLY if staff is on the patio with students. We have installed some security cameras around the building as well. We have never had any issues with security at the school but we prefer to be proactive!
If you have any questions or concerns regarding the health and safety practices of the school, please do not hesitate to speak with Mrs. Angela.
BUILDING CONFIDENT LEARNERS!
Academy Adventures Midtown is passionate about supporting academic and emotional growth in each child. Cloud9 World provides many skills to help our students deal with every day situations occurring in their lives at school or at home. We have seen an increase in our students confidence and how they interact with one another. We will continue to build positive learning behaviors and an environment that fosters student well-being. There are resources for parents as well! We will continue to share the monthly strength resources in the newsletter. If you have any questions, please reach out to Miss Denise.
In September, students focused on individuality. According to CloudWorld9, individuality is your appreciation for all that is unique about you. When you accept who you are, express yourself honestly, and don’t mind being different, you are showing a healthy sense of individuality.
During the month of October, students are focusing on the strength, Optimism. According to Cloud9 World, Optimism is the belief and attitude that all is going to turn out well.
Below are some resources that you can use at home with your child.
LEARNING IS FUN AT ACADEMY ADVENTURES MIDTOWN!
Academy Adventures Midtown believes that learning comes in all forms and all children learn differently and at different speeds. Our goal is to reach each child and help them to build on their strengths. Check out some pictures of students participating in lessons during the school day.
One of the benefits of a small school is that it allows all students in all grades to work together. Learning does not have to be sitting behind a desk working out of a book and/or being lectured by the teacher. Our Miss Denise and Ms Lia strive (and succeed!) to make learning fun and interactive for our students. Allowing the Upper Elementary students to work with the Early Elementary students allows collaboration, teaching, and builds supportive relationships.
October is a busy month! Do not forget that we have Fall Break from October 4-11, 2024. On Thursday, October 31st, we will not have any After School Program.
We are excited to continue our partnership with Humane Society of Southern Arizona. They will be coming again in October do another presentation. We are also very excited to be able to participate in an Outreach Program with the University of Arizona, Wyant College of Optical Science! This is going to be an amazing opportunity for our students in all grades! Thank you Mr. ElKabbash (Galilah's Dad) for helping us become a part of this program.
Our partnership with The Cascades of Tucson Retirement Community will continue. The students really enjoyed their time with the residents and it brightened the day of the residents (check out pictures below). We will be working on crafts, letter and other things to send to them. Our next onsite visit will be in December. Students will get to help the residents build Gingerbread Houses! There will even be a fun competition! Watch for details.
Watch for information on our family event!
