CHMS Weekly Update
August 26th - 30th, 2024
Welcome Back!
We are Ready to be Respectful, Interdependent, Organized, and Responsible Students and Staff! We are Warriors!
We had a great first three days of the 2024-2025 school year! At the beginning of the school year and at other points throughout the year, we focus on learning and reviewing the behavior and safety expectations around the building. Teachers explicitly go through the expectations in different areas and make sure that all students understand what is expected of them in those areas. Students and teachers did a great job with this last week! Keep it up Warriors!
Fall Testing
NWEA and Acadience
At three points throughout the school year, all students take the NWEA for math, reading, and science and the Acadience Reading test for a more diagnostic look into student reading abilities. New this year, our 5th and 6th graders will take the Acadience Math test. Yes, this is a lot of testing, but it ensures that students receive the appropriate interventions throughout the year.
We will start our Fall testing this year with Reading NWEA which will take place on the 28th and 29th this week in reading/ELA classes.
Fall testing will continue next week with the Math NWEA on September 4th and 5th in math classes and Science NWEA on September 10th and 11th in science classes the following week. We will operate on our normal bell schedule during NWEA testing this year.
Acadience testing will also start next week during reading/ELA classes.
Family Resources
Check out the resources linked below for more information about the assessments students will take this year.
W.I.N Time
You may have noticed W.I.N Time listed on your student's schedule this year. W.I.N Time stands for "What I Need" Time and has replaced Homeroom at the middle school. This is a dedicated block during the school day where students receive support based on their specific needs, and these needs are determined by assessment data (NWEA/Acadience). Students may receive interventions to help with reading or math, or they may receive an enrichment in order to challenge them with more advanced concepts. These placements are fluid and may change throughout the year as students' needs change. Students will receive intervention or enrichment four days per week with the fifth day being used to deliver our Social-Emotional Learning Curriculum, Second Step. More info to come about Second Step next week!
If you have any questions about W.I.N Time, please feel free to reach out to our Interventionist, Jill Dagley at jdagley@chsd.us
Arrival
The middle school opens up to students at 7:30 AM, and students should go down to the cafeteria if they arrive before 7:50 AM. We asked students who were dropped off in our car loop to use our new secure entrance last week, but that has proven to be quite a tight fit with everyone walking through the office. Starting this week, students who are dropped off in the car loop may use the old entrance and then head down to the cafeteria from there. If they need to talk to someone in the office, or if parents/guardians need to come into the building, they should use the new entrance. Thank you for your patience and flexibility as we try to figure out what is going to work best for everyone!
Student Council
6th, 7th, and 8th graders can apply to be on student council. Applications are due by Sept 4th. Pick up your application at the Student Council Bulletin Board or see Ms. Mundwiler in Rm 302.
