The South Dakota State Library, a division of the SD Department of Education, has recognized five SFSD schools with the "21st Century School Library Award". Recipients this year were Lincoln, Washington, and Roosevelt high schools, and Terry Redlin and Laura Wilder Elementary. They join the ranks of many SFSD schools in this recognition, and the award will last for the next three years. âš We want to highlight all the ways the Sioux Falls School District SHINES! âš
SHINE stands for Scholarship, Honors, Innovation, Networking and Exceptionalism. Weâre looking for stories we can tell about high school seniors, any-age students, staff (yes, you can and should absolutely fill out this form for yourself!), projects and programs. Have a new partnership that is benefitting the classroom? Win a grant you think the world should know about? Get nominated for or receive a state-wide, regional or national honor? Know a senior stand-out on a team, in the fine arts arena, or in the classroom? How about younger students who are leading by example, making giving to charity a priority, or are making the most of a bad situation? Should a program or portion of your school be highlighted? What about some current projects: experiments, field trips, new collaborative lessons?
SFSD All Star! đ
We are excited to introduce you to our next Staff Star, Robert Johnson! Johnson is the morning custodian at Eugene Field Elementary. He was nominated for this award by his colleague Blair Brunstaing, who shared amazing things about Robert's consistent dedication and positive attitude!
Blair describes how Robert goes above and beyond to ensure the safety and cleanliness of EF's school grounds each day. From clearing sidewalks and the playground in winter to checking the integrity of the fencing and playground equipment, heâs always looking out for the well-being of Eugene Field students. He can often be seen picking up trash while walking the grounds, a true testament to his care for our environment!
Beyond his hard work, Robert is known for his warm interactions with students. He makes it a point to learn their names, shares moments of encouragement, and uses teachable moments when guiding them. Whether itâs a friendly side hug or a gentle correction, students and staff alike appreciate his kindness and commitment.
Thank you, Robert, for everything you do!

5 Healthy Eating Tips for the Holidays
âTis the season for family, festivity, and foodâlots of food. Temptations are everywhere, and parties and travel disrupt daily routines. Whatâs more, it all goes on for weeks. Here are 5 tips that can help:
1. Holiday-Proof Your Plan
You may not be able to control what food youâre served, and youâre going to see other people eating tempting treats. Meet the challenges armed with a plan:
- Eat close to your usual times to keep your blood sugar steady. If your meal is served later than normal, eat a small snack at your usual mealtime and eat a little less when dinner is served.
- Invited to a party? Offer to bring a healthy dish along.
- If you have a sweet treat, cut back on other carbs (like potatoes and bread) during the meal.
- Donât skip meals to save up for a feast. It will be harder to manage your blood sugar, and youâll be really hungry and more likely to overeat.
- If you slip up, get right back to healthy eating with your next meal.
2. Outsmart the Buffet
When you face a spread of delicious holiday food, make healthy choices easier:
- Have a small plate of the foods you like best and then move away from the buffet table.
- Start with vegetables to take the edge off your appetite.
- Eat slowly. It takes at least 20 minutes for your brain to realize youâre full.
- Avoid or limit alcohol. If you do have an alcoholic drink, have it with food. Alcohol can lower blood sugar and interact with diabetes medicines.
3. Fit in Favorites
No food is on the naughty list. Choose the dishes you really love and canât get any other time of year, like Aunt Ednaâs pumpkin pie. Slow down and savor a small serving, and make sure to count it in your meal plan.
4. Keep Moving
Youâve got a lot on your plate this time of year, and physical activity can get crowded out. But being active is your secret holiday weapon; it can help make up for eating more than usual and reduce stress during this most stressful time of year. Get moving with friends and family, such as taking a walk after a holiday meal.
5. Get Your Zzzâs
Going out more and staying out later often means cutting back on sleep. Sleep loss can make it harder to manage your blood sugar, and when youâre sleep deprived youâll tend to eat more and prefer high-fat, high-sugar food. Aim for 7 to 8 hours per night to guard against mindless eating.
Most of all, remember what the season is aboutâcelebrating and connecting with the people you care about. When you focus more on the fun, itâs easier to focus less on the food.
