School Newsletter Term 1, Week 6
Friday 8th March 2024
Kia ora Koutou,
Our dedicated, parent led Enviro Team has been hard at work cleaning up garden areas, making our school grounds even more beautiful and welcoming. A huge thank you to all the volunteers who helped chip a massive amount of stored branches to use in our gardens. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed and are greatly appreciated.
Our staff has been focusing on professional learning, with a special emphasis on writing skills and Te Mātauranga Māori. These initiatives are already making a positive impact on our students' learning experiences inside the classroom. We're excited to see how these new strategies and approaches will continue to benefit our school community.
We also want to extend a big thank you to the Manawatu Jets, Football in Schools, and Mānawatu Tennis for the fantastic in-school opportunities they are currently providing for our students. These partnerships enrich our curriculum and provide valuable experiences that enhance our students' learning and growth.
Nga mihi nui,

PE at West End
We are less than two weeks away from one of the most exciting and well known sporting events for children around the country, the Weetbix Kids TRYathlon. If your athlete pack was being delivered to school you should have now received this, in the pack students have all their much needed gear and event information. West End School will have the school marquee on site to provide a base for West End students and their whanau. If you have any questions please contact gblack@westend.school.nz
Mt Biggs Tough Guy and Gal
We have a strong contingency of athletes traveling to Mt Biggs Tough Kid challenge on the 22nd of March. All students attending will travel via bus leaving West End at 8am sharp! Please try your best to be on time. PE tops will be provided for children to wear on the day. If you are available to provide whanau support please let Mrs Black know as soon as possible.
Girls in Football
We were very excited to host Mikaela Bouwmeester from Central Football Manawatu on Wednesday. Mikaela talked about the growing sport, encouraged the girls to give it ago and taught them some great football skills. We look forward to sending teams to compete in the first ever Primary Girls in Futsal tournament on the 28th of March at Massey Recreation Centre. Students keen on attending this should have come home with a permission slip (Year group requirement 4 - 6)
Tennis in Schools
As shared last week we are very excited to be having Tennis back in school. All year levels will be receiving six sessions with a trained coach of Manawatu Tennis over the remainder of the term. The children so far have been thrilled with the new experience and learning a new skill set. We have some rising tennis players!
Touch Rugby
What a great outing last Saturday our buddying Rugby stars had at the Manawatu Touch competition. We have two teams entered in the competition, a mixed under 10 team coached by Sarah Le and a mixed under 8 teams coached by Keran Wenman and Connor Willis. We are thankful for the support our West End whanau give to our sporting teams as without them it wouldn't be possible to attend so many competitions.
Rippa Rugby Competition Yr 5 -6
On the 4th of April there is a Manawatu Primary Inter School competition for Rippa Rugby, students who are interested in attending should have come home with a notice. If your child hasn’t but would like to play please contact Mrs Black.
School Swimming and Interschool Swimming Yrs 5-6
We are excited to be hosting our School Swimming competition next Monday at West End Pools, all senior students have entered an event or two of their choice. We have a mixture of both competitive and noncompetitive competition happening. If you would like to come and watch we will begin at 12:30pm.
Then the following fortnight we are hosting the Inter School competition at the West End pools where the best swimmers will be chosen to compete, more details to follow on this event.

Swimming has started for all teams!!!
We had all of our classes enjoying swimming this week!
We will be sending reminders of swimming via our school app, but please be aware that
Te Wao Nui o Tāne (Room 2, 3, 4, 5) will swim on Monday,
Puāwaitanga (Room 1, 6, 7, 10 and 11) will swim on Tuesday,
Tipuranga (Room 13, 14, 15, 16, 17) will swim on Wednesday.
Children will need to bring togs, towel, goggles and if your child has long hair it will need to be tied up for swimming.
Bringing Headphones to school
It would be fantastic if children could bring in their own headphones for use with classroom ipads and chromebooks. We have some amazing educational resources available to help support learning within our kura, and it would be helpful if children were able to bring in named headphones to use when on a device.
Whaea Karen's roopū
In Rūma tahi, we enjoyed watching Whaea Karen and her roopū perform on the stage. We decided to write about what we enjoyed the most and used some of our Te Reo Māori knowledge to describe some of the performers.
Birthday Parties!
Rūma 14 have been wondering about birthday parties. We counted all the balloons in a packet and talked about what we noticed. We noticed that there were no orange balloons even though they were on the packet! We also noticed that there were a lot of green balloons. We noticed that there were the same amount of pink and yellow balloons.
