April Showers Bring May Flowers!
We have so much to do with so few days left in our school year. Thank you for making sure that your children are in class everyday that they are healthy AND that they arrive on time. Students who arrive late and/or checked out early miss out on important things so please try to limit tardies and early check-outs. If you MUST check your child out early, please do so before 2 PM. While this is our established procedure everyday, it is important to share a reminder now with our office construction since the check out process may take even longer.
Please pay close attention to the dates listed at the end of this newsletter so you don't miss out on important events!
Next week is Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week. PTO is busy planning special treats for teachers and staff each day. If you would like to help, please sign up here: Staff Appreciation Week Sign Up.
The BOGO Book Fair is coming up the week of May 20th. Unlike our other Book Fairs, this week is not a fundraiser for our school but rather an opportunity to get new reading material in the hands of our students. We do need some parents volunteers during this week. If you would like to volunteer, please sign up here: BOGO Book Fair Volunteers
I look forward to us all growing, learning and succeeding this month at NBES!

BCS Surveys
Buncombe County Schools would like to hear from you to make our schools even better. Please take a few minutes to share your thoughts with us in a brief parent/guardian survey. Responses are confidential, and will help us better serve your family. The survey is available through May 12. Click the link below to share your thoughts now: We also wanted to share that between now and the end of the year, students in grades 4 through 12 will be taking this year’s BCS Student Survey, which you can view here. If you have any questions, please reach out to me at heidi.allison@bcsemail.org.
Each May, National Speech-Language-Hearing Month provides an opportunity to raise awareness about communication disorders. We are very thankful for our Speech Language Therapists at NBES! Thank you to Ann Marie Miller and Kathleen Pierce for all they do!

Looking ahead to the End of the Year!
At the end of the school year, we are required to complete end of the year assessments for all students. It is very important that students are in attendance on testing days so they can complete these assessments. Please note if your child is sick, then we understand that you need to keep your child at home. Please see the image below for a reminder of all assessment dates.
We will encourage perfect attendance during End of Grade testing for 3rd and 4th graders. All students with perfect attendance and no tardies on EOG testing days will be entered into a drawing for prizes!

General Information and Reminders
General School Safety Information
Visitor Procedures
ALL parents and visitors to campus must sign in at the office and obtain a visitor sticker (or a volunteer pass if applicable). Please note that you must sign in even if you are only visiting the cafeteria. Your cooperation in helping us to follow Central Office policy and ensuring the safety of all children is expected and appreciated.
If you have an appointment or scheduled time to be at school in the morning, and wish to walk in with your child, please still plan to follow the established procedure of coming to the office, signing the visitor registry, and obtaining a visitor tag.
Visitors will only be allowed to visit a classroom (during instructional time) if the visitor has scheduled the visit with the teacher beforehand or if the visitor is a scheduled volunteer.
Visitors during Lunch
Parents are invited to eat with their child in the cafeteria; however, as a courtesy to other students, we ask that you do not bring outside food such as fast food and/or sodas into the school cafeteria. Parents should arrive at school in time to get a visitor’s pass and report to the lunchroom hallway five minutes before the scheduled lunch time. Please always let the teacher know ahead of time if you plan to eat with your child.
The daily lunch menu will be read during morning announcements. Occasionally there will be a menu change due to late deliveries or snow days. You can find links to BCS menus here: https://www.buncombeschools.org/page/menus-and-pricing
Should you desire to bring in a special snack for your child’s birthday or another event, please coordinate this with your child’s teacher so as not to conflict with our lunchroom policies. In addition, any food brought into the school to be shared with students must be store bought with ingredients listed. Please allow school staff to distribute snacks due to their knowledge and understanding of students’ allergies and dietary needs. Our school also encourages healthy snacks and choices.
