Principals Message
May is always an exciting and celebratory time! As we acknowledge our student and staff milestones, we also take time to reflect and plan for continuous improvement. This past spring, members of our community, staff, and students participated in school partnership surveys. This data supports our evaluation of progress toward our goal of comprehensive student development. A few data points specifically we are proud to share from the survey are:
- BCES Students 91.4% I am proud of my school
- BCES Students 87.8% I feel like I belong at this school
- BCES Families 94.6% My child's school respects all cultures and diversity
- BCES Families 86.9% My child's school culture is positive and motivating
- BCES Staff 96.3% I am proud of my school
- BCES Staff 98% Our school's discipline plan is restorative rather than punitive
As we reflect and celebrate growth toward our shared goals for this school year, I know we absolutely could not have achieved this without our dedicated staff. Please join me in appreciation and thanks as we celebrate Teacher and Staff Appreciation this week! Our front office, BCES PTA, and MVCC have partnered together to ensure our staff feel special and know how important and valued they are! We encourage you as well to take a moment to share an email, card, letter or any words of appreciation for our BCES staff!
Yours in Education,
Megan Stein
Principal

PK/K New Student Registration
Do you live in Frederick County and have a child that will turn four years old on, or before, Sept. 1?
FCPS is excited to expand full-day Pre-Kindergarten programs across the county! Almost all of our 4-year-old Pre-K classrooms are full-day programs. BCES currently is still only 1/2 day sessions, this allows for 40 spaces in our program. Pre-K provides a strong foundation for success in school.
Good news: Enrollment guidelines have changed, making more households eligible based on household income. All families are encouraged to apply as we make the best efforts to allow as many students to attend as possible.
Registration is now open. For more details about how to register, please visit our Early Childhood Education webpageAlso, if your student will be five years old on, or before, Sept.1, they are eligible for Kindergarten in FCPS. Please enroll through the online portal on www.fcps.org.
Current students remaining at their school will roll over in the summer to their next grade automatically. If you are moving and transferring to another school within FCPS, you will enroll in the summer after July 1.

The Book Fair is BACK at BCES!
We’re excited to invite you to our upcoming Scholastic Book Fair. Hosted by our staff, this event is an opportunity for students of all ages to build their home libraries and further their love of reading. As always, all purchases benefit our school.
Here’s what you need to know about the Fair, which will take place from May 9th to May 13th in the Media Center:
- We’re excited to celebrate our love of books together at the Book Fair, but we also need volunteers. Click here to volunteer.
- Our Book Fair offers eWallet, a safe and secure alternative to cash. Simply create a free account to add funds and/or invite family and friends to contribute so your child can select their own books. Any unused funds can be spent at The Scholastic Store Online or to fund a future eWallet.
- All students will preview the Book Fair Monday - Wednesday. Students will be able to purchase books on Thursday and Friday. The Book Fair WILL BE OPEN during PTA's Spring Fling.
- If you can’t make it to the Fair, then shop at our school’s Online Book Fair. All orders ship directly to your home, and shipping is free for book orders over $25. Your online orders will also benefit our school.
You may also visit our Book Fair homepage to learn more and get started with eWallet and online shopping:
We look forward to seeing your child there!
Children's Mental Health Awareness Week May 1-7
Children's Mental Health Matters!
It's easy to know your child needs help dealing with a fever or broken bone, but mental health problems can be harder to identify. You may be surprised to learn that:
- During the COVID-19 pandemic, 1 in 4 children, compared to pre-pandemic incidents of 1 in 5, experience a mental emotional or behavioral health problem before age 18. These children are experiencing a surge of depression, anxiety, trauma, loneliness, suicidality, and substance use that will have lasting impacts on them, their families, and their communities. (CDC)
- · About half of the estimated 7.7 million children in the United States who had a treatable mental health disorder in 2016 did not receive adequate treatment (US national and state-level prevalence of mental health disorders and disparities of mental health care use in children.
JAMA Pediatrics, 173(4), 389-391.https://doi.org/10.1001/jamapediatrics.2018.5399
The tricky part of parenting is knowing the kinds of behaviors and moods that are usual for the stage of development your child is in and when your child needs help. If you are concerned, don’t wait, ask for support from your
pediatrician, school counselor or others in your network.
