Lutherville Lab Report
What's gone down & what's coming up at the leopards' lair.
October 4, 2024
We had an absolutely PACKED week at the Lab!
In addition to some excellent instruction and hard work from learners, our students did a great job with our second fire drill, our 5th graders learned about internet safety with Officer Frank, we had the great return to outdoor recess after 2396 consecutive days of rain (approximately), and on Friday we culminated with a schoolwide Goals Parade and unveiling of the commemorative Green Ribbon sign on the building.
On Thursday teachers and staff who were not celebrating Rosh Hashanah participated in professional learning. We made the most of every minute and had a meaningful day, as highlighted below. We also enjoyed a wonderful staff lunch provided by our PTA and community! Thank you so much! It is so important to us to have the opportunity to "break bread" together and are deeply appreciative of the scrumptious meal!
Enjoy the weather this weekend! Back to a 5-day week next week, highlighted by FALL FAMILY NIGHT on Tuesday evening. And a reminder that our food drive is ongoing this month. See information below!

Fall Family Night - October 8th!
Fall Family Night is just one week from this Tuesday, on October 8th. The anchor session for our Fall Family Night is a Cultural Fair in the gym! This is an opportunity to celebrate the wonderful diversity that makes Lutherville Lab such a special community featuring 28 different home languages and 93 students whose families have a primary home language other than, or in addition to English! We are seeking families who would like to display and share some of their family's cultural roots. We welcome returning families to continue to share and welcome new families to share as well! If you'd like to sign up or have questions, please reach out ot Shaimaa Hussein at shimaahussien86@gmail.com.
We are excited for a jam-packed event, featuring some new activities and established staples:
- Recorder performance
- Jazzercise
- Green School Scavenger Hunt
- Volunteer Certification Station
- Calming Strategies and Activities
- Math & Reading Fluency Activities
- Face Painting
- "We are Lutherville" Collaborative Mural
- Pumpkin Collaborative Decoupage
- Girl Scout Costume Giveaway
Visit from the Lutherville Black Legacy Committee
On Thursday, as part of our staff professional learning activities, we welcomed representatives from the Lutherville Black Legacy Committee, Charlene Graham, Celeste Adams, Margaret Selby, and Emily Stills, to present their lived experiences attending segregated schools and integrating schools in Baltimore County, including Ms. Still's experience of integrating Lutherville Elementary. We were honored and grateful for their time, memories, and wisdom and grateful to Ms. Conley for helping us to get connected with the Committee, as some of them are her family!
The presenters shared the deep sense of family, community, and wholeness that they felt at Lutherville Colored School #24. They also impressed upon us the challenge that was put on them as children to integrate white schools, and the strength and courage it took to do so was clear. One of the presenters spoke to her experience when attending high school of having to catch a bus at 6am that traveled all over western Baltimore County to pick-up students attending Carver School, one of only 3 secondary schools for Black children in Baltimore County at the time. The difference in attending schools where they were seen and supported was evident. In addition to Ms. Conley, some other staff in the room learned of nieces, nephews, and children of presenters that they had taught over the years, a reminder that some of the students our staff has had the opportunity to teach are only one generation removed from these distinguished presenters.
A Day of Learning for Teachers
On Thursday teachers also examined narrative writing samples across grade levels. They scored sample pieces, discussed the change in expectations across grade levels, and identified the feedback and instructional moves to help students grow as writers.
Environmental Garden Club was able to get in the garden on Wednesday!
Goals Parade
This morning, students paraded around our building displaying personal and learning goals they've set for themselves for the school year. Be sure to ask your child about their goal and encourage them toward achieving it! We danced and cheered for one another and then gathered at the canopy. There, we heard our 3rd graders rock the song "High Hopes" on recorder to pair with our high hopes for the year ahead. Then, we unveiled our Green Ribbon that will adorn the building and greet visitors. We hope that when students see that, sign they'll not only take pride in their school, but remember that if they work hard and work together, they can accomplish big things! Indeed, they already have!
In a little sign from the universe, just as we unveiled, a Monarch butterfly floated its way across the building right in front of the sign. Those families who have long been at Lutherville know that we raised monarchs for many years (until domestic raising became prohibited last school year), so that coincidence was quite a moment.
