A message from the principal
Dear Dayton Families,
February is a month full of fun and special opportunities for our students and families. We're especially looking forward to connecting with you at our February family/teacher conferences. We deeply value your partnership and appreciate the chance to connect during this time.
This February, we are celebrating Black History Month, recognizing and honoring the contributions of Black individuals throughout history—a recognition that is important not just this month, but year-round.
February also brings us "I Love to Read Month" and our PTO Booster Fun Run! Thanks to our dedicated planning teams, we have some exciting activities planned for our students. The funds raised from the Fun Run are incredibly valuable, directly supporting student experiences, educational enrichment, classroom support, and even playground equipment.
In the classroom, our students will be focusing on honesty, which Character Strong defines as "being truthful in what you say and do." To support these conversations at home, we've provided grade-specific resources:
Kindergarten Family Connection
Second Grade Family Connection
Fourth Grade Family Connection
We look forward to seeing you at conferences later this month. Thank you for your continued partnership.
Sincerely,
Jessica Wippler

Specialists Highlights
Art
This trimester, 4th grade students are analyzing how artists use the principles of art contrast and emphasis in their work. Contrast is when an artist combines opposite or different elements in an artwork. Emphasis is when an artist creates a point of interest in an artwork, typically by using contrast. One art form that wonderfully exemplifies these principles is Notan–a Japanese art concept that explores the relationship between light and dark in a composition. The word "notan" is made up of the Japanese words "no" and "tan", which mean "thin" and "heavy".
Core
We have begun working on coding! We have switched from using the Scratch website to use a Google platform, Google CS First. CS stands for Computer Science. We are using this in grades 2 - 5. It still uses the Scratch platform, but without all the extra things we don’t use on it. Kindergarten and First grade are still using Scratch Jr. on the iPads.
All grades are working on premade projects to work on their coding skills. Then later in the unit they will be able to create their own project.
Explorations
🌟 Kindergarten – Marble Run Engineers
Our young engineers are continuing their exploration of motion! This month, we’ll investigate how pushing and pulling forces affect speed and direction. Students will put their knowledge to the test as they design and build their final marble runs!
🦁 First Grade – Animal Reporters
First graders are continuing their journey into the wild as Animal Reporters! This month, we’ll focus on how animals communicate through body language and sounds to survive and thrive in their environments.
🌋 Second Grade – Save the Island
We’ve just begun our new unit, "Save the Island!" Students will explore how landscapes change over time due to natural events like volcanoes, floods, glaciers, and erosion. We’ll discuss how these forces shape the world around us and what people can do to prepare for and adapt to them.
⛈️ Third Grade – Weather Warning HQ
Third graders are stepping into the role of meteorologists as they analyze weather patterns! This month, we’ll investigate temperature, wind, clouds, lightning, wildfires, and how different biomes around the world experience extreme weather events. Students will also track real-world weather data to identify patterns, make predictions, and understand how meteorologists forecast the weather.
🗺️ Fourth Grade – Geographical Investigations
Our fourth graders are starting their "Geographical Investigations" unit, where they’ll examine natural resources, human-environment interactions, and agricultural regions in Minnesota. Through maps and research, students will explore how geography shapes our daily lives.
🇺🇸 Fifth Grade – The American Revolution
Fifth graders are diving into early American history as we begin our American Revolution unit. This month, we’ll explore the causes of the revolution, including the French and Indian War and the various tax acts that led to rising tensions between the colonies and Britain.
Library
February is “I Love to Read Month!” All month long, students at Dayton will engage in activities that focus on everything we love about reading. Some fun activities we are doing in the library include reading with a friend, a bookmark contest, and Book Fair Bingo! Yes, the Scholastic Book Fair will return to Dayton this month!
Please join us as we celebrate the joy of reading by attending our book fair in the gym during evening conferences. Dates and times are:
Monday, February 10th 4:10 - 8:00pm
Tuesday, February 11th 4:10 - 8:00pm
Thursday, February 13th 4:10 - 7:30pm

Music
Kindergarten students have been playing several different percussion instruments while singing a song about animals in the jungle. First and second graders are practicing writing notes on the music staff to make short songs. Third graders are practicing sixteenth notes, a fast rhythm, on instruments and with their voices.
Fourth and fifth graders are practicing on their recorders and are learning how to play several different songs. Please remind your fourth and fifth grade students to always bring their recorder back to school if they ever bring it home to practice.
PE
Please bring gym shoes again for the safety of everyone! We completed an underhand roll and bowling in the moonlight. We are working on overhand throw and catch. We will do some throwing activities and games to finish up the month.

Wow! The school year is flying by! I am so glad that we got to enjoy some warmer weather after our cold spell.
We have Book Fair during Winter Conferences this month which means we are looking for volunteers to help those evenings with set up, running the book fair, and take down. There are 3 different shifts per conference night. Click on the link below if you are interested in helping with that!
The Booster Fun Run is kicking off this month and we are going to be looking for some volunteers with the preparation of that. Be on the lookout in the next week for more information and the sign up.
