Hello folks and welcome to the 13th edition of Dorm Happenings. It has been an adventurous week here at Howser Dorm on the KSB campus.
As we welcomed back our students on Sunday afternoon with a fine meal of chicken lasagna and galic bread with an assortment of deserts and drinks. The girl's dorm continued with their traditional Sunday afternoon cooking together time as Ms. Z and her crew prepared fried chicken. It was off to the recreation gym where Mr. Larry discussed the events of the week and what would lead up to the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays. The games of the night were scooters, bicycles and guessing shapes and textures. Some students were also busy using our newly constructed sensory room in the Howser basement. Many students were experimenting with the new tables, games and sensory equipment.
On Monday our students were busy with some opportunities for academic enhancement before and after recreation time. Mr. Larry/I gives ample opportunities for academic enhancement for any student who needs extra work or time to complete assignments or study for exams. After a fine meal prepared for supper on Monday night by Ms. Renee and the food service staff our students had a lesson on Veterans Day. What the history of this day is all about and if anyone has family or friends that have served or are currently serving in the military and why it is important for us to remember them, their families and the sacrifices they made or continue to make. So for all you Veterans out there a HEARTY THANK YOU from the students and staff at KSB. Our recreation activity on Monday night was going to Dogs in the Dorm but we had to reschedule so we did a movie " Back to the Future" with our middle and high school students along with Open Gym time with pool, Pop A Shot basketball, AIr Hockey and Shuffleboard. Our elementary students picked out ceramic pieces and what kind of piece and colors they would create for Christmas. Then played in the gym with Hula-Hoops and bicycles.
On Tuesday, we had a world of excitement with the factory explosion on Payne Street about 2 blocks from campus that gave our campus quite a jolt. Our students and staff on campus handled it with great care and concern but it did create some major changes in schedule with supper in the dorm and recreation activities rescheduled to later in the night. But we did eventually get all clear and were able to play various games and continue with their movie Back to the Future on our big screen. On Wednesday night the middle and high school students played bingo in the dorm recreation area as the lightning and rain was much worse after returning from the mall trip. We had 5 games of Bingo and a different winner in every game. Our elementary students braved the rainy elements with a trip to the mall. Some of our students had never been to the mall before so we got to introduce them to the stores and the food court where some ate Chic Fil A and others tried some of the Chinese food and they were amazed by some of the stores and the Christmas decorations on the giant trees in the center of the mall. Our elementary students did a great job even though the weather outside was frightening the inside of the mall was so delightful ( Ok, I know, it is not Christmas yet. I will not cheat Thanksgiving). But, speaking of Thanksgiving we will be having our Dorm Thanksgiving Dinner with students and staff next Thursday night, so be prepared for kids coming to school Friday a little on the ( Stuffed Side).
Thursday night after an excellent meal of chicken strips, fries and rolls was prepared by Ms. Tamika in the cafeteria we were able to get in the recreation gym with some musical performances on the piano by some of our elementary students and then we had some time to teach the elementary students how to play air hockey, and shuffleboard. We also had some free time for the elementary students to ride bicycles. The middle and high school students closed out the night with finishing up the movie " Back to the Future", along with some time playing pool, bouncing on the bouncy mat and also shooting basketball. The older students also an opportunity to talk about what kind of food they enjoy most for Thanksgiving.
It is with great pleasure that I would like to introduce our staff member of the week, Ms. Destiny McDevitt. Destiny is our 2nd Shift Supervisor here at the Howser Dorm and has been at KSB for 7 years at KSB
Ms. Destiny began as a houseparent on third shift during summer school of 2017. She moved to 2nd shift during the following school year. She was then promoted to be the Houseparent Coordinator in 2021 and began working with students in the independent the Howser dorm Independent program. Most recently Ms. Destiny became the 2nd shift supervisor in 2023. She enjoys spending time with her family. Her favorite thing about her work that she loves is gaining experience from working with each student and strive to be their advocate.
Ms. Destiny feels most rewarded in her work when she can be a safe place for her students. Where they can feel comfortable and confident to talk with me about any struggles they may be having in school, family or life.
She is most passionate about preparing the students for success in life. Her goal is to prepare them when they leave KSB so that they have gained the necessary skills to survive and navigate through society.
We are truly grateful to have Ms. Destiny on our team here at Howser Dorm and for all the children at KSB.
Until Next Time.
