VOLUNTEERS NEEDED ON MONDAYS
MARCH IS READING MONTH
Dear Highland Families,
We love to read every month, but in the month of March, we kick it up a notch! This year, we are using the theme of Adventure. We are excited to share that our school was awarded a Huron Valley Educational Foundation Grant, Let’s Go On An Adventure, to help us celebrate March is Reading Month. Through the grant, we were able to team up with One School, One Book and purchased a copy of The Wild Robot, by Peter Brown for EVERY child and staff member at Highland Elementary. This is a special, communitywide shared reading event. Everyone – students, parents and teachers will all be reading along together following the attached reading plan. We have selected a title that can be followed and understood and enjoyed by younger students, but will still captivate and stimulate older children. Generally, you will be asked to read about 15 minutes each night.
On Friday, we kicked off our month long celebration at our Community Circle. Ask your child about it! In school, your child will be invited to answer daily trivia questions based on the previous night’s reading. In class, students will explore the book through activities and discussion. You will want to make sure your family keeps up, but try not to get ahead, so that your child can be included.
Throughout the month, we have additional special activities planned. Keep an eye on the Family Notes! We will wrap up March with a school-wide Adventure Day on March 21 to celebrate One School, One Book.
When a whole school reads a book, there’s a lot to talk about. With your help, we can build a Community of Readers at our school.
Thank you for joining our adventure,
The Staff and Students at Highland Elementary
