MESSAGE FROM DR. NEAL
Town Hall meeting for parents and students on September 26 at 6:15 via Teams. This is an opportunity for me to share the vision for our school and exciting new learning experiences for our students. I also want to hear your suggestions for the school. Every year we want to improve, and our school cannot move forward without you.
Please join me from the comfort from your own home. Meeting link: Join conversation (microsoft.com)
COUNSELING CORNER
Melody Osborne, School Counselor
7th grade and 6th grade: HM/PLT with Science and Social Studies
Belinda Hotchkiss, School Counselor
8th grade and 6th grade: HM/PLT with ELA and Math teachers
Counseling Corner:
βWhatβs the big deal? I only missed a few days of school.β
Attendance matters:
Missing even a few classes can have a snowball effect. Not only does being absent make it hard for your child to keep up, but chronic absenteeism is linked with a higher dropout rate. Make sure your middle grader knows you expect them to be in every class every day, unless theyβre sick or thereβs a family emergency.

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING
Susan K. Purcell-Orleck, SEL Facilitator
Whether it's called 'social and emotional learning' or 'emotional intelligence,' most people understand it's critical to pay attention to the development of the whole young person, including character education. Parents have a dual role to play in raising a self-aware, respectful child who knows how to manage his or her emotions, make responsible decisions, and resolve conflicts non-violently. At home, you should strive to create an environment of trust, respect, and support. Remember that modeling 'emotionally intelligent' behavior at home is the first step in nurturing emotionally intelligent children.

PRESIDENTIAL SPEECH CONTEST
Amanda Little, writing professor from Vanderbilt University, extended an invitation to our students to participate in this year's Presidental Speech Contest.
The contest is open to all Tennessee students in 4th through 8th grades and asks kids to write and perform their own presidential speeches -- submitting 3-minute videos in which they describe their America and give voice to the kind of leadership they want to see in the next four years. Finalists will be invited to present their speeches with Ann Patchett at the Southern Festival of Books in Nashville on October 26!
This is a great, non-partisan opportunity for your students to share their powerful voices and ideas during the presidential election season.
For details and instructions on how to enter, see our landing page. And for inspiration, please check out this short video montage from our previous presidential speech contest!

LAPTOP REMINDERS
Students, please remember the laptop expectations. Students are expected to bring their laptop and charger to school daily. Ms. Purcell-Orleck uses a great strategy for this. When she shuts down her laptop at night, she plugs it in to the charger but places the laptop in her backpack. So, the next morning, itβs already in her backpack, and she just has to unplug the charger and place that in her backpack as well.
We have also had at least 15 cases of cracked screens since the start of the school year! Please remember that students are held responsible, even when damages are accidental. Please review the LAPTOP POLICY PRESENTATION we went over at the beginning of the year.
MEIGS LIBRARY
Join us for Project LIT Book Club!
We will be discussing New Kid by Jerry Craft. Please submit the attached permission slip to Ms. Maggio, Ms. Spacek, or Ms. Tucker-Dye. Copies of the book are available in the library on a first come, first served basis.

National History Day (NHD) After-School Club
This year, Mrs. Verner & Mrs. Tucker-Dye are offering NHD as an after-school club for 7th and 8th graders. This is an AWESOME opportunity for students to compete at the school, regional, state, and national levels. Last year, Meigs students took 2nd place in the NATION for their website titled, "A Year Without a Summer: An Explosive Turning Point in History."
Be aware that more than one meeting is offered each week in order to accommodate busy student extracurricular schedules. (Your student can get a list of meeting dates from either teacher.) Students should sign up on the list (posted on the bulletin board outside Mrs. Verner's room--Rm 131) for their preferred meeting day. Each meeting is limited to 24 people. Students must have a parent or guardian sign and return a permission form in order to participate. (Forms will be distributed during the first week of meetings.)

Good afternoon Meigs families!
The Meigs Academic Magnet Band has been selected for feature performance at the 66th Annual Tennessee Music Educators Conference at Gaylord Opryland this coming Thursday-Saturday 10-12 April 2025 (We do not yet know our exact date and time.) This is the Band programβs third selection for this event, the others being in 2013-2014 at the conference held in Memphis and then again in 2019-2020, which was unfortunately lost to COVID-19.
The process of earning selection and the preparation for a performance is arduous and is held in such regard that music programs that are selected cannot apply again for another four years. Selection involves several hours of live rehearsal and performance recordings compiled over the course of two school years that are eventually boiled down into one audition recording. This tape is then sent out of state to a national panel that scores each submission. The auditions are βblindβ, so no school names or identifying marks are included that judges could pick up on.
Each ensemble category (Band, Strings/Orchestra, Choral, etc.) is scored individually regardless of grade/age level. That the program has further been chosen to perform for the Tennessee Bandmasters Association Hall of Fame Ceremony indicates our audition was scored highest of any middle or high school band program in Tennessee. Meigs is only the second Jr. High or Middle School program to achieve this honor in over six decades.
These performances will incorporate all 8th Grade Band students and will also include many 7th Grade Band students. We are so incredibly proud of our students and excited for the opportunity to show the State what our students are capable of in April.
