Letter from the Principal:
May 1, 2024
Dear Scenic Families,
Hello and Happy May Day to you all! It is hard to believe that we are beginning the last month of the 2023-2024 school year. It has certainly been an amazing year of growth, learning, new experiences, laughter, friendship and it has given us many, many reasons for us to celebrate! Below are just a few of the celebrations that I want to share with Scenic Families:
- I am so proud of our 3-4-5 grade students for the grit and perseverance that they showed when they were taking the CMAS tests this past month. These tests are long and are not easy!
- Right after CMAS was over we started another assessment called NWEA MAPS. This is a great assessment as we get to see the growth that each child has made, grades 3-5, in either math, reading or both, depending on their grade level. I am so excited to see the growth our students have made!!
- Our 5th graders have taken so much pride in our landscaping project out front. We worked one afternoon and got everything planted and mulched. They are asking for more projects and I love that they want to leave Scenic better than they found it! That is what true community is about and we have that in abundance at Scenic Elementary.
- Holy Cow our POP Ticket Tumbler is so FULL!! Proof of Pride Tickets are being handed out all day every day to our students for working hard, being nice and just being awesome! It is so fun to see how proud the students are when they come to put their POP Ticket in the tumbler.
- Since the beginning of the year we have gained 25 students! The families we have added to Scenic are amazing families and I am so happy that they have joined our Scenic Community!
- We currently have 24 kindergarten students that are signed up and excited to come to Scenic next fall! We hosted a fun afternoon of Kindergarten Open House a couple of weeks ago and we had a blast meeting the new kinders and their families. Our Student Council kiddos gave tours and did an amazing job, Felix the Fox was here for pictures and each of our 2024-2025 Kindergarten Students signed a letter of intent saying they were committed to come to Scenic Elementary School next fall! It was an awesome afternoon!
- Our Read-A-Thon brought in some amazing guest readers to read some of their favorite picture books to our kids! We had the CMU Women's BBall Team, Players from the Jackalopes Baseball Team, our very own D51 Superintendent Dr. Brian Hill, D51 School Board Members, Authors, Scenic Parents, several members of our local law enforcement teams and many others! What a great way for us to spread the love of reading. Thanks to everyone who helped to make our 2024 Read-A-Thon a success!!
- We have been busy working on next year's school schedule and class lists. I will be sharing both of those with students and their families in July! Thank you to those parents who gave me insight on their children, I will take every piece of feedback into account. As I have shared with families, our class placement system is thorough and very good. Thank you for trusting us to do our very best for all students.
- Several times a year we give all of our students, K-5, the DIBELS assessment. The Dynamic Indicator of Basis Early Literacy Skills, is a quick screener that helps us to determine if our students are making the progress they need to. Our students did very well from beginning to end of the year. Our goal is to move all students to benchmark and above and by looking at the early data from our spring benchmark our kids did an awesome job.
- I have loved getting to know Scenic Students and their families. Thank you for being so welcoming to me. My conversations with all of you, no matter the topic, have been positive and encouraging. Thank you for helping to make my first year at Scenic, in Grand Junction and in Colorado such an amazing experience! I am truly blessed.
Thanks!

BIG THANKS!!
Scenic Students and Staff would like to give a BIG thanks to Mt. Garfield Nursery and Bre Fiihr. They made a significant donation to our project and even delivered all of the plants and materials for us to use!! We appreciate them helping to design such a beautiful spot in front of our building. It will be fun for all of us to watch it grow!!
It is time for our annual Spring Buy One Get One Book Fair. This book fair is not a fundraiser. The sole purpose of this is to help you affordably bring books into your homes for your students to read this summer. It truly is a BOGO. If you or your student purchase a book they can pick out another book that is the same price or less. Studies show that reading just 20 minutes a day builds empathy for others, creates a strong vocabulary, and positively affects and boosts mental and physical health.
BOGO Book Fair Hours:
Monday, May 6th - Friday, May 10th
~open during lunch recess times
~after school until 4:30
~8:00-4:00 on Friday
Parents, you may come during the time after school to shop as well as during student led conferences. Teachers will also have wish lists filled out for their classrooms if you would like to purchase a gift of books in honor of teacher appreciation week. You can set up an eWallet for your student so that they won’t have to bring cash to school if you choose. Information on that can be found at our Book Fair website:
https://www.scholastic.com/bf/scenicelementaryschool
You may also shop online but that will not be BOGO, and you have to spend at least $25 in books to receive free shipping.
Teacher appreciation week is May 6-10 . If you would like to let your child’s teacher know that you appreciate him or her in some form, we know they would greatly appreciate it. Even just a quick note or email would let them feel as though you truly appreciate all of their hard work. We all do appreciate the great work that is going on at our school, and it's great to have such awesome teachers at Scenic! Let’s let them know how much we appreciate them!
Check Scenic May Calendar
Please make sure that you are up to speed on the many, many events, field trips and activities scheduled in May by looking over our May Calendar closely. We have many field trips scheduled and we want to make sure that students come with everything they need for those awesome opportunities.
Student Led Conferences
Friday, May 10, 2024 there is no school so that we can hold our K-5 student led conferences. This is an awesome opportunity to listen as your student walks you through the learning and growing that they accomplished this year. We hope that we have all families participate in these important conferences.
Senior Walk @ Scenic Elementary
We will be welcoming back graduating seniors that attended Scenic Elementary School on Monday, May 13, 2024. We have invited those special graduates to be a part of our final WHBN Flag Pole Ceremony that morning beginning at 8:50.
Scenic Graduations
- Kindergarten Graduation & Music Program: Thursday, May 16 @ 6:00 in the gym
- 5th Grade Graduation: Tuesday, May 21 @ 2:00 in the Scenic Gym
Staying Connected
This summer I will continue to send out monthly newsletters to families and I will add to our Scenic Elementary Facebook page so that we are able to stay connected. I will share important information and upcoming events. Be on the look out for a fun Scenic Summer Activity for all students and their families to participate in. I will send out more information on that before school is out!
Kindergarten & New Student Registration
New student and kindergarten registration will open on July 18, 2023. Please help us to spread the word about our awesome school by inviting families to come and visit Scenic. Feel free to share the school phone number and let them know that they can call and leave a message and we will return their call as soon as possible. We are hoping to add kindergarten and first grade students to Scenic so that we can have two rounds of each grade level. We are very close to having the student numbers to make that happen!
