Parenting Corner (The Importance & JOY of Reading)
As a principal and a father, I believe the seedlings of democracy germinate in prek-12 public education. As we seek to build an intelligent, insightful, and involved citizenry, literacy provides the foundation: it is the base for all learning. While educators face many challenges, one of our greatest ones is how to teach the nuts and bolts of reading day in and day out, and not kill the joy of reading in the process (what I like to call, “readicide”).
Over the past 2 weeks, our kids read for a combined total of almost 1,000 hours. Many students were getting up early before school or reading on the bus to try and have the opportunity to pie me in the face! I hope they fell just a little more in love with the written word. As a father, I just kept feeding my sons books until they found one they loved. For my middle son, it wasn’t until middle school when he read Ender’s Game that he realized how great reading can be.
WHSV showed up this morning for our assembly and interviewed 4th grade winner Fiona Thomas. Fiona logged 52 hours over the past two weeks and couldn’t stop giggling as she shaved the side of my head. Our younger grades top reader was Sofia Shiflet: she may have a future in hairdressing! Congratulations to all of our students who participated! Here’s hoping my hair grows back by the end of spring break. 🤞 Tune in to WHSV at 5pm and 6pm tonight to see the fun!
Delegate Chris Runion visits MVES!
Delegate Chris Runion and his wife Jennifer came to read to Ms. Roeschley's class this week to celebrate agriculture. They read Indoor Farm, Outdoor Farm and then our 4-H extension agent, Caroline Turner made seed necklaces with the kids!

Thank you also to everyone who has supported our student Read-A-Thon the past few weeks. The excitement around reading has been a joy to watch and we hope to continue the momentum! You are welcome to view our presentation from last night's event for ideas about how to make reading with your children fun!

Principal's Super Science Stuff
March Week 3 - Investigate the Crime Scene! - Food Webs!
Observation: A number of animals in the forest have gone missing!
Question: Can you figure out what happened to them and solve the mystery?
Materials:
Printouts or word cards of a variety of animals that could be found in the forest. Some examples include: rabbit, frog, fly, wolf, deer, chipmunks, snake, eagle, spiders, owl, skunk, raccoon, bear, plants.
Large piece of cardboard - ie: open up a cereal box and use the brown side.
Tape
String
Crayons
Investigation:
Considering the food chains of the various plants and animals represented on the cards, build a community food web to indicate WHERE each of the plants or animals may have gone!
Add in any non-living parts of the ecosystem that might have influenced where an animal might have gone. (ie. water sources, shelter)
Results:
Take a picture of your web and submit it to your teacher on SeeSaw!
Reflection:
What do you think happened to the missing animals?
