Hillside Middle School
Winter 2020
Principal's Corner
At our last PTSA meeting, we were fortunate to have the Northville Youth Network present on some parenting strategies that build independent young people who are able to advocate for themselves. As the father of a 6th grader this year, I found the message especially resonant as I find my middle schooler just entering that difficult time between childhood and young adulthood. Though he's nearly my size, he is not grown yet; he is also no longer a child incapable of making (or ordering) his own meals, doing his own laundry, mowing the lawn, or myriad other things he will need to learn to be a successful adult. Oddly enough, I find that the more "adult" responsibilities I give him, the less he behaves like a child. When he protests, I often say "How are you going to learn to be an adult if you don't do the things adults do?"
As it relates to school, I encourage him to email his teachers when he has questions or concerns. I might proof a message, but I don't communicate for him. Every so often, he logs into MISTAR and then brings me the laptop and explains what I'm seeing. I spend a large part of my day navigating MISTAR at work, and I could certainly do so without him, but the value is in the parent/student time together and in him owning his performance through an explanation. When he has a conflict, either with his sisters or with an adult/kid at school, I (with some difficulty) resist the urge to jump in and tell him what to do. A common question in our house recently has become, "What do you think you should do about that?" It works for everything from "My teacher is driving me crazy" to "Dad, I'm hungry." The school goal is the same as the home goal: Learn to advocate for yourself and solve your own problems. I am here to help you, but I won't do it for you.
This is my oldest child and the first time I'm experiencing middle school as a father; with two other younger children, I have about 8 more years of parenting middle schoolers to go. As the principal of Hillside, or as Mason, Maddi, and Ava's dad, my goal for all of our kids is the same: I'd like to see them leave middle school as gritty, self-motivated young adults who can advocate and problem-solve. If we can do that, our kids will be successful in high school, college, or career

Boys Basketball
2019 8th Grade Boys Basketball Season in Review
The boy's basketball season started with a tough loss to Holmes Middle School at home. The boys won their next 2 games against Novi White and cross-town rival Meads Mill. The day after taking down their cross town rival on a rare Thursday game they lost on a last-second shot to Scranton Black. This was a game we should’ve won but played sloppy and the boys learned a good lesson about always being ready to play. Going into the Thanksgiving week we played Highlander Way and got back to our winning ways with an easy victory to take the record to 3-2.
After the break we traveled to Ore Creek in Hartland down 8 with 3 minutes left the boys amped up the defense and came back to get the win. The boys kept up their winning ways with wins over Novi Green, Stevenson, and Scranton Orange to take the winning streak to 5 and overall record to 7-2. Their win over Stevenson avenged a 20 point loss to them the previous year. Next up was a rematch against cross-town rival Meads Mill. Unfortunately an unlucky shooting day for the boys where they could not buy a bucket lead to a tough loss. Two days later the boys finished with an impressive win over Novi Green to finish the season 8-3. I want to thank the boys for the great season and wish them the best next year when they move on to high school.

2019 7th Grade Boys Basketball Season in Review
The seventh grade team started off the season with a decisive 17 point home victory over Holmes Middle School from Livonia. The opening contest saw 13 of the 15 players score for the Raiders. The team then held off a solid Novi-white team due to strong defensive play. Taking on Meads Mill at their place, the Raiders were able to pick up their third straight win to open the season. The next two games against Scranton-black and Highlander Way saw a surge in offense with the team averaging 51 points in decisive wins. Traveling to Hartland, more balanced scoring yielded a 12 point win. Back at home, the boys jumped out to a 14 point lead at the half against Novi-green en-route to their 7th straight victory. With four games remaining, Stevenson Middle School provided a staunch test, but the players pulled together for a narrow 5-point win on the road. Contests number nine and ten tested the squad, but timely rebounding and shooting enabled the team to take a 10-0 record into the final contest of the season. At Northville High School, the boys played a hard-fought finale against Meads Mill but fell by two points. Many thanks go out to the administration, fellow competitors, parents, and players for an amazing and memorable 10-1 season. Go Raiders!

Peer Links Art House
Hillside currently has 43 general education Peer Links who have participated in the program during the 2019/2020 school year
Links participate in a disability awareness training
Links have the opportunity to cultivate friendships with special education peers in our Cross Categorical and Autism Spectrum Disorder Classrooms, as well as with some peers in our Resource Classroom
Links use their lunch or enrichment period to support their peers during lunch, electives, or academics.
Building Bridges
Many of our sixth graders have the opportunity to spend time with students in the Cooke School Satellite classroom through our Building Bridges Program. Mrs. Grimm and her staff organize activities such as group games, art projects, adapted bowling in the gym and STEM challenges. This year the program received a grant from the Northville Education Foundation for new STEM materials that are being used to create engaging STEM challenges for the groups. Our sixth graders enjoy the chance to have fun while learning about the diverse needs of their new friends, and Mrs. Grimm's students enjoy time with peers.
Cooper Standard
One of our district goals for the next few years is to grow our community partnerships in order to allow our students to go out into the field and shadow professionals who work in the fields our students will enter after graduation. At Hillside, we have partnered with Cooper Standard to offer our students a unique opportunity. In November, approximately 20 students had the chance to visit the Cooper Standard facility for a Manufacturing Day, seeing how the STEAM principles they have learned in their science, tech, and math classes come to life in the real world. Over the last few months, and continuing until May, Cooper Standard has hosted workshops at Hillside where students can learn from professionals and apply those same principles. With sessions like Measurement Systems, Catapults, and Wind Tunnel, participants have a chance to learn from and work side-by-side with professionals in the field. We are excited to see where this partnership goes in the coming years!
