School Newsletter Term 2, Week 6
Friday 6th June 2025
Kia ora West End whānau,
What a busy and exciting time it has been at our kura! Over the past week, we’ve seen a flurry of activity across the school that reflects the energy and enthusiasm of our ākonga and staff.
Assessment Week has been in full swing, with students across all levels engaging in various tasks that showcase their progress and learning. We’re incredibly proud of the focus and effort they’ve put in. Our teaching team continues to work hard behind the scenes, using these assessments to inform next steps and ensure each learner receives the support and extension they need.
A special mention must go to our Power Hour Enviro Group, who recently planted 20 new trees and seedlings around the school grounds. These were generously donated by one of our school whānau, and we are deeply grateful for this contribution. It’s always inspiring to see our students taking such pride in their environment and playing an active role in caring for our place.
You may have noticed some exciting developments around the school, too. Our hāngī cover is nearing completion, and the new lighting system for our Rongoā garden is almost ready to go. These enhancements will support our cultural and sustainability learning and further enrich the spaces we learn in and care for.
Our Structured Literacy and Numicon programmes continue to be a strong focus across all year levels. These approaches are having a positive impact on student engagement and progress in both literacy and numeracy, and we’re excited about the consistency and clarity they bring to our teaching practice.
Another highlight was the recent learning walk undertaken by our Te Wao Nui o Tāne learners along the awa. With the support of our parent helpers, students were able to connect more deeply with our local environment, exploring the stories, science, and significance of our river. Thank you to all those who helped make this a memorable and valuable experience.
As always, thank you for your continued support. We are proud of the wonderful things happening every day here at West End School and look forward to sharing more with you soon.
Ngā mihi nui,
Tony West
Principal

Reminder of our school times
Please do not drop your child to school too early
Our school gates are opened at around 8.05-8.10am. If you have to drop your child off early, please do so as close to this time as possible for their own safety.
West End School starts at 8.50am in the morning. Children can wait next to the turf until 8.30 and then enter the school grounds when the bell goes. Please try to get your child to school on time as this sets them up for the day and helps establish a healthy routine - so they're not catching up with learning if they arrive late.
School finishes at 2.50. If you are picking your child up, please be at school at this time. We are having many parents turning up late which causes disruption for our office staff and teachers who have to delay appointments and meetings after school.
Tipuranga Vibe Assembly next week
Tipuranga classes Room 16 and 17 will be presenting next week. It would be great to see our whānau to celebrate our learning and see what we've been doing. Please be seated before 2.10 in our school hall next Friday!
Pae Tamariki 2025
On Wednesday 4th of June, the Kapa Haka rōpū performed at Pae Tamariki. We had tamariki from year 1 through to year 6 and they all performed with amazing heart, courage and kotahitanga.
They opened with Maddy performing a karanga and Max performing the school pou mihi.
Kei wareware i a tātau was sung next with solo performances from the sisters Areta and Keita.
Tihei Mauri Ora and Nau Mai Rā, Haere Mai Rā was performed after that, with Areta, Jury and Poilei leading the waiata.
Next was a Whaikōrero from one of our leaders, Jonah, followed by the oriori, Whakaewa-i-te-Rangi.
After that, our amazing kōtiro showcased their beautiful poi skills with the waiata Whakarongo Rā.
Nei Rā te Kaupapa was next, lead by Mishou. The tamariki learnt the actions for this waiata for the first time and were incredible! Aaliyah, our second leader, finished the waiata beautifully.
The boys brought the energy with the school haka, Ko Wai Rā. This was led with strength, by Jonah, and was complemented by the rest of the tama with their strong actions.
Aaliyah and Maddy performed ātaahua solos at the end with Kei Wareware i a Tātau and Jonah led a haka to finish.
Kei te tino whakahihi a mātau. We are so proud of our tamariki, for their whakamana and kotahitanga.
Also a big thank you to all of the whānau who got their tamariki to school early and helped with preparations!
Nāku noa nā,
Whaea Karen, Whaea Vicky and Matua Rhys
Tipuranga
Room 16
In Room 16, we have been using our mana aotūroa to break tasks into simple steps so that a robot could follow them. Our first task for the robot was to make a jam sandwich. We got a bit stuck when we forgot to tell the robot to take the lid off the jam! Once we had decided on all of the steps in the right order, we wrote some instructions.
