Reardan Weekly
October 4th, 2024
Elementary Highlights:
As the cooler fall weather approaches, please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the changing temperatures. Layers are a great option, as mornings can be chilly, but afternoons may warm up. Be sure to send your child with a jacket or sweater, and don’t forget hats and gloves for those extra cool mornings. Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing helps our students stay focused and ready to learn throughout the day. Thank you for your attention to this as we move into the fall season!
If you need to change your child’s end-of-day plans, please send a note with them to school. If the office does not receive a note, staff will follow the regular transportation schedule. Additionally, if you must notify the office of any changes by phone, please do so before 1:30 PM. We cannot guarantee that your child will receive the message after 2:00 PM.
If you are interested in volunteering, our Reardan Partners In Education (P.I.E.) group has the following opportunities:
October 11: First Popcorn Friday (held on the 2nd Friday of each month)
October 12: Movie Night in the Commons (held on the 2nd Saturday of each month)
October 18: Trunk or Treat and Carnival (please contact Amanda Wulff or email reardanpie@gmail.com)
(Photos) 1st graders were finger painting to create the perfect fall tree for the start of the new season. They are also working on reading, building, and writing CVC (Consonant/Vowel/Consonant) short 'a' words during our ELA intervention time.
Highly Capable Program
In October, all 2nd and 5th grade students will be screened for our Highly Capable Program using the CoGat screener. Students who score above the 97th percentile on this screener will be eligible for the full CoGat assessment. The CoGat is just one piece of data used to determine eligibility for the program. Additionally, during October, we accept parent recommendations for testing. If you would like more information or would like to request referral paperwork, please contact jamiemikelson@reardansd.net.
Middle School Highlights:
We have completed the first month of school, and mid-quarter reports were given to all students on Friday, October 4th. Please take a few minutes to review your student’s mid-quarter grades and discuss successes, areas for improvement, and goals. All students in Ms. Koch’s ELA classes have been working on reviewing the data from their STAR assessments and setting progress goals. Also, we do have an after school academic support option from 2:45 to 3:45 Monday through Thursday in Mr. Dewalt’s room. This is a time for students to focus on homework prior to going home and get support from Mr. Murkins. If you have significant concerns about your child’s academic progress, please email Ms. Newsum and we will set up a meeting to problem solve with you, your student, and teachers. Our goal is to provide our students with support while we challenge them academically.
One area where our middle school students are struggling is with organization. Taking time to sort and organize their backpacks each evening could be a huge step toward mastering this skill. Designating a time each day for at home study–even if your child says he or she doesn’t have homework–can also build organizational skills. ALL middle school students have access to Freckle for English and math, just tell them to log in and watch those skills grow.
Middle school students are OUT for sports! We have students out for football, volleyball, soccer, and cross country! Shoutout to all of our amazing coaches who are dedicated to helping our students form strong bonds, improve their teamwork skills, and grow together! This week our 8th graders had the opportunity to attend a hands on career fair with representatives from the Spokane area in the fields of construction, manufacturing, medical, and first responders. Our community needs skilled workers in these fields, and this was a taste of what they can focus on in the future. Check out this amazing website for more information on local career opportunities: CareerExploreNW.org This is a free website provided by KSPS.

Security Updates:
Hi Parents,
I am excited to announce that the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office has started working School Resource Officer Shifts here at Reardan- Edwall School District. We have partnered with the Sheriff’s Office to have Deputies in the school on a part-time basis. This position will be filled by their entire team as they bid for shifts. This week we had Sgt McLagen and Deputy Stein join us at school. They were out and about at recess, passing periods, lunch breaks, and some classrooms. They received a warm welcome from our amazing students. I am very excited and look forward to having them here more throughout the year. Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies will be here working as SRO’s spending time with the kids and offering extra security. All law enforcement investigations will be handled by the Reardan Police Department.
Any questions please feel free to reach out.

Director of Security/Emergency Manager
