IBWHS Student News, September 16, 2024
Hi there students,
I hope you have had a great first three weeks and that your schedules are landing in a place that feels right for you.
Y’all are doing a great job of keeping your technology away during the school day. I see a huge difference in classrooms and hallways. We know that taking a break from technology is good for our minds and bodies, and it helps you to stay focused on your learning at school.
Please know that technology is also away during FLEX time. During FLEX time, you need to be in a classroom. You can also be in the cafeteria to do school work with your classmates. We are a closed campus with the exception of lunch, so, you do need to stay on campus during FLEX Time.
The Homecoming Dance is Friday, October 18th. You need to have 90% attendance in order to attend Homecoming. If you miss school and are under 90% attendance and want to attend Homecoming, please see your grade level administrator.
The Club Fair was a huge success last week! It’s never too late to join a club if you missed signing up at the club fair. You can find all of our clubs listed on our website at: https://www.pps.net/domain/803 Go to the bottom of the page and access the slide show titled “24-25 IBW Clubs.”
I’m looking forward to the volleyball game vs. Lincoln this Thursday and the football game this Friday at McDaniel!
Have a wonderful week and see you around school.

P.S. My photo this week comes from my visit to the Wooden Boat Festival in Port Townsend, WA.

Deadline for making class changes - TOMORROW!
The process of adding and dropping classes is coming to a close. The class change deadline is Tuesday, Sept. 17. District policy states that if a class is dropped after the deadline, it results in a WF (Withdrawal Fail), which is added to the transcript. This will factor into a student's GPA as an F.
If any student needs school supplies, they should see their counselor. We have supplies and backpacks available for students with need.
Remember that you can drop in to see your counselor any day before school, at lunch or after school.
2024-25 Back to School Night
Our annual Back-to-School Night is tomorrow evening, September 17th. While this evening is directed towards parents/guardians, students are welcome to attend. Doors open at 5:45pm and the program begins at 6:00pm in the Auditorium with classroom visits beginning at 6:30pm. Students, please be sure your parents have your schedule when they arrive as we will not be printing out schedules.
In addition to the auditorium presentation and classroom visits:
Counselors will be available after the auditorium presentation.
Our Booster Club will have all the new 2024-25 IBW Merch available for purchase.
Our Parent Groups will be present so you can learn how they are supporting our school and how you can purchase a membership and get involved.
And our Bookkeeper, Ana Curtis, will be available in her office in the main office from 5:45 - 6:45pm
to assist you with any of these Back-to-School payments:
✅ Pay Class Fees and Make Contributions
✅ Pre-Order/Purchase Yearbook
✅ Purchase ASB Membership
✅ Pay the Required PIL Fall Athletic Season - Pay to Play Fee
- Pay Fees/Make Contributions
Please take a look at classes and programs that are asking for contributions to support enriching our programs. No student will be denied access to Ida B. Wells HS classes based on inability to pay. Thank you for supporting our students and our programs at Ida B. Wells High School. You can make these payments on school pay in the Costs/Contribution section.
- Pre-Order/Purchase Yearbook
You can pre-order/purchase the 2024-2025 Yearbook on school pay in the Costs/Contribution section. We highly encourage you to pre-order the yearbook now so you won't forget later. Pre-order numbers are used when ordering the yearbooks and we don't want to sell out! The price will also increase later in the school year.
-ASB Membership
The link to purchase an ASB membership has re-opened on SchoolPay. With the increase in the ticket price for student entrance to Volleyball, Football, Wrestling and Basketball games, this is a wise investment. Get yours today!
-Required PIL Pay-to-Play Fee for Athletic Participation
Now that we are fully underway with Fall sports, please pay this required fee ASAP if you have not done so. This fee covers such things as coaches salaries, referees, transportation, etc.
Parking for BTSN
Just a reminder to give yourself plenty of time for parking for BTSN. Since our teachers are here for this event, much of the parking lot is already filled. Fortunately, we have no home athletic events on 9/17 so student parking and the Rieke parking lot should have spots available but still consider carpooling, taking public transportation, parking in nearby neighborhoods and walking or if you live nearly, please walk! Thanks!
2023-24 Yearbook News
If you requested to have your yearbook not shipped home at the end of the last school year, or if your yearbook was delivered to the wrong address, please see Ana Curtis in the bookkeeper’s office between 8:30 and 3:30 (Students must purchase during lunch).
We also have about 20 yearbooks available to purchase for $75 each on a first come first serve basis from Ana Curtis in person in the bookkeeper’s office between 8:30 and 3:30 (Students must purchase during lunch).
Don't forget to purchase the 2024-2025 yearbook on SchoolPay. It's only $65 if purchased by winter break. After that the price goes up to $75.
Finally, if you would like a copy of the spring supplement containing spring sports, the spring play and other events we weren’t able to cover in the yearbook, they are available for free outside the main office and Higbee’s room:142.

2025 Ida B. Wells Costa Rica Adventure

In collaboration with Walking Tree Travel, Profe. Durham and Mr. Olsen are planning a student trip to Costa Rica in June, 2025.
This packed itinerary includes hiking to waterfalls in the rainforest, ziplining, rafting, surfing and trekking up the highest peak in Costa Rica, Mt. Chirripó!
The following link has detailed information about costs, dates, itinerary, accommodations, safety and support.
2025 Ida B. Wells Costa Rica Adventure
The trip is open to students currently in grades 9-12.
At least one year of Spanish language study is recommended, but not required.
Please email Profe Durham at adurham@pps.net or Mr. Olsen at aolsen@pps.net if you have questions about the trip. Also, please plan to join our informational Zoom meeting where you will have an opportunity to ask questions directly to Gabriel Duncan, our program coordinator.
What: 2025 Costa Rica Adventure Informational Meeting for Parents and Students
When: Wednesday October 9th, 2024
Where: Zoom: https://zoom.us/j/396673459
Time: 7:00 p.m.
This meeting will be recorded, in case you are not able to attend. Please let Profe. Durham or Mr. Olsen know if you are interested and will not be able to attend the informational meeting.
This trip is ideal for students who are open-minded, have a genuine passion for exploration and are willing to step out of their comfort zones. Students should be responsible, safety-conscious and prepared for the mental and physical challenges that are inherent to group travel. Students should also have a genuine desire to expand their knowledge of Costa Rica, its local history and cultural traditions.
¡Vamos a Costa Rica!

Shout Out to Physics Teacher, Sruthi Murlidharan
48% of the students in Sruthi Muralidharan's AP Physics C (with Calculus) class scored 5s on the exam last spring where the national average is only 29%. She also achieved this as only a second year teacher, and it's because of her that we are the ONLY PPS high school to offer AP Physics C. Congratulations!
