A message from the Principal and Assistant Principal
Dear Cactus Valley Families,
It’s hard to believe October is behind us, and we’re already in the 2nd quarter! We are grateful to be part of the CVE community, working with dedicated staff and supportive parents to help our children thrive.
Thank you for attending parent/teacher conferences. Your involvement, combined with your child’s teacher’s support, plays a crucial role in their success. Remember, you can reach out to teachers anytime throughout the year with questions or concerns.
We were thrilled with the amazing turnout at the Scholastic Book Fair! It was wonderful to have our families back inside CVE, and the excitement of students sharing their new books was heartwarming.
Mark your calendars for our Thanksgiving Dinner on Wednesday, November 20th! Please complete and return the RSVP form with your payment (cash or check) when the information comes home the first part of November. No tickets will be sold the day of the event. Prices are as follows:
Adults: $6.00
Seniors: $4.00
Non-CVE students: $3.00
CVE students: Free
Stay tuned for more details on lunch schedules as we gather again as a CVE family.
As colder mornings arrive, please ensure your child dresses warmly for recess. Unless it’s raining or heavily snowing, students will be outside, and we want them to be comfortable. If they’re missing items, encourage them to check the Lost and Found.
A reminder that kids enter the building at 7:57am and school begins promptly at 8:00am. Arriving late causes disruption and results in lost instructional time. Let’s work together to ensure students are here by 8:00 to start their day on time and have a great start to their day!
Our teachers have reviewed data from the first quarter and are providing interventions for students needing support or acceleration. We are focused on closing gaps in ELA and Math, and one of our goals is to improve writing proficiency. Ask your child about the compare/contrast writing they worked on earlier this year. We’ll reassess their progress mid-year.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions. Together, we’ll continue to make CVE a place where our students and staff excel!
Sincerely,
Kelly Detlefsen, Principal
Stacy VanHercke, Assistant Principal

Counselor’s Corner
The temperatures have dropped and winter is right around the corner. Remind your students to make sure they are dressed appropriately for the weather. Make sure they have hats, gloves, and winter coats (if you need any help with any of these items, please reach out to me). As we enter the holiday season, focusing on gratitude and things we are thankful for, helps each of us get through stressful moments.
Angel Tree sign ups have begun. Please reach out to the River Center if you need to sign up: 970.984.4333.
Kindergarten is doing MindUp with Ms. Sarah. I taught a class last week in Kindergarten about small problems and big problems. Small problems we can handle on our own and big problems we need the help of an adult: (someone is hurt, scared or in danger). In first grade I did a review of small problems and big problems. 2nd grade is working on empathy and compassion. 3rd grade is working on identifying others feelings and understanding others perspectives. Fourth grade is working on similarities and differences in reactions when they are faced with the same situations as their friends. In fifth grade they are working on emotional regulation and understanding how to calm down before a small problem turns into a big problem.
Totes for Hope has begun. It is a program run through the River Center that gives families 6-7 non perishable food items weekly and is distributed on Wednesdays. If you are a family that could use the supplemental food, please contact me and I can get you signed up. Parents and guardians, please label your students jackets and coats, especially as we enter colder mornings and hot afternoons in the fall season. During this holiday season, if you need help with gifts for your children or food for family gatherings, please reach out and I can connect you with many resources helping with the holidays.
If your family needs emotional support or other types of assistance, contact me, Amy Chabin, at 970-665-7764 or achabin@garfieldre2.net.

Art Barn
In the Art Barn this month, we finished learning the 7 elements of art but continue to revisit them as we create new art. We started learning about the principles of design-balance was our main focus. We created symmetrical or asymmetrical construction paper designs, brought in the fall vibes by creating tissue paper or construction paper pumpkins and learned how to "roll-a-masterpeice" leaf. The last week of October, we celebrated Halloween every day by creating 3D bats, cats, pumpkins and ghosts. Next up, we will be introducing different Artists to explore.
PE Update
The second quarter has started off really well. 4th and 5th graders are doing great with the archery unit. They are doing great shooting safely and accurately following the 11 steps to archery success. 1st - 3rd are working on various levels of rolls and rotational skills. These include simple skills like log roll and egg rolls as well as more complicated cartwheels and other rotational skills. Older students will be combining them to make a short routine. In kinder we are learning some new games and activities that work on our spatial awareness. We learned spiders and flies and are exploring the gym with scooters. Students are doing a great job remembering their PE shoes. Thanks for all the support from home!
Library Update
Greetings from the Library,
Thank you to all of the families that supported our fair! With your generosity, we collected $140 dollars in our share the fair fund, which we were able to spend on books for our friends that couldn't get one on their own. Additionally, we were able to use our Scholastic Dollars fund to purchase books worth $530 for our classroom libraries.
Thank you also to the staff from the Silt Library for joining us! They said that they posted record numbers for new library card holders signed up!
Thank you all for coming to the fair!
