Author Amanda Driscoll Visits Southside Elementary
We want to say a big “Thank You!” to author/illustrator Amanda Driscoll for coming and spending part of her day with our first and second graders at Southside Elementary. She talked to them about her writing process and not giving up on her dream of being an author. The students tried their hand at making their own characters. She went to every class and signed a copy of her book for each student.
Thank you also to Kentucky Humanities and The National Endowment for the Humanities for providing us this awesome opportunity and allowing each student to take home their own copy of Duncan the Story Dragon.

He talked about his improvement as an effective communicator and as a responsible collaborator through his race car driving and his Cultivate experience. Reminder
Solar Eclipse - April 8th!
The 2024 Solar Eclipse will begin at approximately 1:50 pm on Monday, April 8th, and end around 4:50 pm. While Shelby County is not in the path of the total eclipse, our community will experience around 99% of it. Schools across the district have been planning to take full advantage of the learning opportunity this rare event provides.
Unless the sun is 100% covered, it is unsafe for human eyes to view without protective eyewear. Therefore, all students will be provided glasses approved for viewing the eclipse. Students will be allowed to take the viewing glasses along with them for the ride home.
Our principals have been working with teachers to plan a variety of activities to take full advantage of this “once in a lifetime” learning event. Some of the activities planned are school-wide viewings, cross-curricular lessons, and project-based learning opportunities. Expect teachers and schools to publicize their plans in newsletters and on school website postings. All of our principals plan for students to view the eclipse safely.
Families planning for students to miss school for eclipse viewing purposes are encouraged to contact their principal regarding an educational enhancement form to ensure the student will have an excused absence.
Thank you in advance for helping us make the 2024 Solar Eclipse a safe and enjoyable learning experience.
