Thesis Statement:
"Harrison Bergeron" by Kurt Vonnegut and "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson demonstrate the impact government and tradition have on members.
Quote Analysis for "The Lottery"
“Although the villagers had forgotten the ritual and lost the original black box, they still remembered to use stones” (Jackson 7).
This quote supports the stance because if the people could forget the ritual and the original black box than they can also forget about the use of stones and never have to continue the lottery. Tradition should be overruled and changed by the citizens in order to have everyone feel safe and not worry if it concerns them.
Quote Analysis for "Harrison Bergeron"
“They reeled, whirled, swiveled, flounced, capered, gamboled, and spun. They leaped like deer on the moon. The studio ceiling was thirty feet high, but each leap brought the dancers nearer to it. It became their obvious intention to kiss the ceiling. They kissed And then, neutraling gravity with love and pure will, they remained suspended in air inches below the ceiling, and they kissed each other for a long, long time” (Vonnegut 3-4).
This quote supports my stance because it demonstrates how Harrison and the ballerina felt when they no longer had the handicaps how good it felt to no longer be held back. Although the government tries to give the best and handle every situation cautiously, some of the laws effect the citizens in other ways than helpful. Citizens should overpower and change the laws that are negatively affecting the people because they know how they are being treated and how difficult/unfair they are being treated.
Harrison Bergeron
Harrison Bergeron was a 14 year old boy who was removed from his family by the government. Harrison rebelled against the government by removing his handicaps on tv and saying he was the emperor, this resulted in him being shot.
Mrs. Hutchinson
Mrs. Hutchinson was a wife and mother who was late for the lottery. Her husband ended up picking the piece of paper than volunteered the Hutchinson family. She began to speak out and refuse to continue the lottery, but she was forced to get on stage and chose a slip of paper and it just so happened that she got the paper with the black dot. Mrs. Hutchinson was later killed with stones.
Conclusion
Citizens should have the power to control and fix unlawful rules that harm them created by the government in order for all to be impacted in a good way. In the upcoming election, important points are more jobs that are better paying so that people can be able to maintain themselves, gay rights for people who feel discriminated, abortion rights for people who would not be able to maintain the child/ are not in the right mindset, and healthcare that is sufficient to all. In the following election I'm afraid that Trump will become the president of the United States, because his proposals are only impacting the wealthy good while low earning people would struggle in life.
