Improving Student Achievement Outcomes Using Rigorous Instruction
HIGH IMPACT INSTRUCTION
Lansing School District is committed to supporting teachers with High Impact Instruction through the implementation of Instructional Coaching and high quality professional learning to support teachers with planning, instruction, and assessments all focused on appropriate grade level standards. The principal goal for teachers is to use a direct instruction model that is structured and systematic for teaching the academic grade level standards. Direct instruction is unambiguous and characterized by a series of supports or scaffolds, where students are guided through the learning process with a clear outcome of learning (learning targets), clear explanations and demonstration of the learning target, and supported practice with feedback until independent mastery has been achieved.
Standards - Based Planning
High Impact Instruction starts with standards-based planning.
Simple strategies to ensure student learning outcomes are met.
- Create guiding questions that point to the essential knowledge, skills, and ideas to be learned;
- Identify what is to be assessed and how it will be assessed based on the rigor of the language used in the grade level content standard;
- Create a learning progression (learning map) identifying what is to be learned and specific building block skills that will need to be mastered in the progression of learning;
- integrate questions, checks for understanding, and formative assessments into every lesson so that the teacher can be sure that ALL students understand what they are learning and how well they are progressing in their learning.
