Growing Successful Learners - Whakatipu Mātauranga
Matt's Message
Kia Ora Whānau
Last week, while enjoying being part of the Tūhua celebration assembly and watching their term video, it gave me a moment to stop and reflect on all of the different opportunities that our children have during a term. As educators, we probably don't step back and reflect enough on the number of different learning opportunities and experiences that we cover over a term, we are so often completing one event/activity and immediately moving onto the next. But in this moment on Friday, it was awesome to watch the Tūhua video and also the kids faces as they also reflected and remembered all of the things they had done this term. Even as I write this newsletter today, we have 3 of our Karewa classes up at the Marae for their Marae experience.
These events and opportunities don't just happen. It takes a great team of teachers, support staff and often you as parents to make all of these opportunities come to life. So as we head into the end of term 3 on Friday, I would like to take a moment to thank and acknowledge our teaching team for their commitment and dedication to providing these learning opportunities, often outside of the classroom, and to you our parents for supporting these with getting permission forms back and supporting with supervision and transport.
As we look to term 4 there will be a number of changes starting to happening around the school starting over the holidays. Many of you will have seen the green safety fencing going up around the external boundary of the school on Parton Rd and around onto Dickson Rd. Watts & Hughes have been appointed as the head contractor for the building works that will happen onsite over the next 6-9 months.
This work has been some three years in the planning, so to see a site safety fence is a real step towards things kicking off. Over the school holidays there will be contractors on site with Block T (the horse shoe shaped building) likely to be demolished over this break. This building coming down will allow them to prepare to bring in the 6 classrooms that will replace it.
While the building site will be fenced off, I would like to point our the the safety of our whānau and tamariki is of great importance. We know many whānau and tamariki like to use our school facilities during the breaks, and while this is still fine, we would like to highlight that going into the building site is completely off limits. Please be mindful of this when on the school site moving forward.
Like all school terms, term 4 will be filled with activities and events along with quality teaching and learning. For your family planning and admin our events calendar has been updated with all of the events where either children are off the school site for an event or when parents are invited into the school for the event. Please take some time to go through this calendar which can be found here.
Hats
Term 4 is the start of our two terms, during which Tamariki are expected to wear their school hats when outside.
The success of this comes down to the school and parents being on the same page. With term 4 just around the corner, now is a good time to dig out those school hats and get ready for next term.
We accept there were mixed messages and confusion around hats in term one, so this information will hopefully clarify things moving forward.
Hat Requirements:
All students are required to wear school-approved sun hats whenever they are outside during school hours in terms 1 and 4. This includes breaks, Physical Education (PE), sports, and any outdoor class activities.
Students without hats must remain in designated shaded areas during break times and outdoor activities.
Designated Shade Areas are:
Matakana/Hall Shade, Decks of Karewa, Tuhua Shade by the new playground, Te Manawanui and Motiti, Karewa Sandpit and shade area.
As the poster attached outlines No Hat? = No Sun - You're in the shade for Fun
We strongly encourage you to name your child's hat. Many hats end up in lost property, and if they are named, it is much easier to return them to your child's class.
We appreciate your support as we move into term 4.
Ngā mihi

Please include your child’s name, room and reason for absence.
If your child arrives at school after 8.40am they are late. Please ensure they sign in at the office before going to class. Thank you.
As part of our School-Links communication system, an automated text message will go out to all unexplained absences. This number is a reply once only.
While we understand that families sometimes need to take time away from school, it is essential that we as a school are notified.
Any absence longer than 20 school days will need to be approved in advance by the school principal. You can do this by sending an email to papamoaprimary@papamoa.school.nz explaining the reason for your child's absence and the dates they will be away. If your child is absent for longer than 20 school days the MOE instructs us to remove a child from our school roll. If you live outside of our school zone there is no guarantee that your child will be able to re-enrol at Pāpāmoa Primary School. It's important to keep communication open between us. If you have any questions or concerns about this process, please feel free to reach out to us.
Thank you for your cooperation and support in your child's education.
