Colin Bowker, Class of 2024 Eagle Scout Project
Donate: https://www.gofundme.com/f/benjamin-peirce-and-stephen-abot-memorial
Colin Bowker, a lifelong resident of Salem and a member of Scout Troop 24 for seven years. For his Eagle Scout Project, he wants to honor two local heroes of the American Revolution by installing a new memorial in a prominent location. This will be at the rotary of Church St. and Saint Peter's St. opposite a Salem History placard in the crosswalk.
Captain Benjamin Peirce was the only minuteman from Salem to die while engaged at the Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. His memorial and bronze plaque are currently low and obscure, and do not reflect his sacrifice for our freedom.
Major General Stephen Abbot was a Salem merchant who became the leader of the scouts attached to General Washington’s headquarters. After the war he was appointed Major General of the Second Division, Massachusetts Militia. Though he played a vital role in several campaigns and battles, he has no memorial in his hometown.
With the support of the Salem Veterans Council, he proposes to relocate the existing memorial of Benjamin Peirce from the rotary of Church and St. Peter’s Streets to a nearby space owned by the City of Salem. I also propose to create a new memorial for Major General Stephen Abbot and place it in the center island next to the pathway that bisects the rotary. This way, both men will receive the recognition and respect they deserve from the community they served.
Attendance Incentive
This Wednesday Salem High School will begin monthly drawings for being on time to school. Every scholar that is on time to school will receive a ticket that they place their name on and place in the bucket for the item they would like to win.
We will still continue to enforce three tardies a term and scholars will need to make that time up in detention.
If a scholar or family is having a hardship with attending school on time, please reach out gburns@salemk12.org

Basketball Best of the Best
BEST FRESHMAN
Jordan Maxson, Salem
A standout eighth-grader for Salem Academy last winter, Maxson took home a similar honor in this column in 2023 as the “Best first-year player.” Now officially entering high school and transferring to nearby Salem High, Maxson only elevated his game.
An NEC All-Conference selection, Maxson made an immediate and profound impact for head coach Tom Doyle, quickly establishing himself as the team’s top offensive option and one of the premier talents in the area. He averaged just under 20 points per game, shot close to 40 percent from distance (with 49 makes), grabbed 3.5 rebounds and dished out 2.5 assists. Maxson had some of his best performances down the regular season stretch and into the playoffs, showing maturity and confidence rarely seen from a player his age.
Honorable mention: Rex Satter, Ipswich; Elian Rodriguez, Salem; Graham Lewis, Manchester Essex; Carlos Velazquez, Gloucester; Finn Baron, Marblehead.
Lots of Witches receive honorable mention.

In School SAT Day is on APRIL 23, 2024
Isn’t this just the same test but online?
No, College Board didn't just take the paper and pencil test and put it on the computer. We took the opportunity to make the SAT a far better test experience for you.
What’s staying the same?
Still measuring the knowledge and skills that matter most for college and career.
Still scoring the test on a 1600-point scale.
Still administering the test in schools or test centers with a proctor present (not at home). Test centers will continue to be open to all students, not just those enrolled in that school.
Still offering access to free, world-class practice resources.
Still supporting all students, including those who need accommodations on test day.
What’s changing?
You’ll take the SAT on a laptop or tablet.
You’ll take a shorter test, about 2 hours instead of 3. Find out how adaptive testing makes this possible.
You’ll have shorter reading passages instead of a few long texts.
You’ll be allowed to use your calculator on the entire Math section and there’s a calculator built right into Bluebook™, the digital testing application.
How do I practice?
Find everything you need to start practicing and preparing for the digital SAT here.
Have more questions? We’ve got answers!
