Homer Elementary
October 2024
π Message from Mrs. Uhl π
We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to each of you for attending our recent Parent/Teacher Conferences. Your involvement and commitment to having constructive conversations about your childβs progress play a crucial role in their academic and personal success. It's clear that we all share a common goal: to help every student thrive.
The Importance of Attendance and Timeliness
As we work together, Iβd like to highlight the importance of consistent school attendance and punctuality. According to AttendanceWorks.org, students who miss just two days a month can fall behind significantly in their learning. Moreover, students who are frequently tardy miss important instructional time and can struggle to catch up. Research shows that being late to school even just once a week can lead to a loss of up to 10 hours of learning each term. Ensuring your child is at school and on time every day sets the foundation for a strong educational experience.
The Role of a Healthy Lunch
Additionally, a healthy lunch is vital for maintaining your childβs focus and energy throughout the school day. Studies indicate that students who eat a balanced meal perform better academically, with up to a 17% improvement in test scores and classroom behavior. Encouraging your child to make nutritious choices not only supports their academic performance but also their overall well-being.
Thank you again for your continued partnership. Together, we can ensure that every student at our school has the support and resources they need to succeed. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

π Counselor's Corner π
Hello October! The primary focus of our initial unit is the development of a Growth Mindset and effective Goal-Setting strategies. We are utilizing the Second Step Elementary program, a research-based social-emotional learning initiative designed to enhance children's social-emotional competencies. The skills and concepts taught through Second Step aim to benefit children in both their academic and personal lives.
Your child is learning not only how to set achievable goals but also how to implement strategies for successfully reaching those goals. It is essential for children to recognize that what works as a goal for one individual may not be suitable for another. Rather than feeling discouraged or frustrated, they are encouraged to adapt their plans and continue progressing, even in the face of challengesβan essential aspect of a growth mindset. I hope you are all enjoying the cooler weather and feel free to reach out to me anytime at veronicaschmidt@homerknights.org
