A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
GRADUATION MASS AND CEREMONY
Our Graduation Mass and Ceremony will be conducted this coming Thursday. We will celebrate the fruits of our work with our community as we formally graduate our young adults. At Graduation we work to bring honour to our students and to give them a strong sense of their achievement, of empowerment, of our pride in them and of the love and support that goes with them to their new stage of life.
This year's Graduation extends on the Year 12 Retreat theme this year 'Be a friend of mine'. It is a wonderful theme and our hope is that many of the graduating class can maintain their personal friendships and be long life friends through the notion of being 'Prendiville Forever'.
It is always challenging to describe a Graduating Class. The Class of 2018 are a wonderful group of individuals but combined they have an incredible wealth of gifts and talents. When the Heads of House were asked what is at the heart of this year's graduating class the responses included:
Mrs Sharrett: This group has been tenacious in its desire to achieve their goals regardless of the academic pathway chosen.
Mrs Wolfe: I feel this is a group who rise to the occasion when asked.
Mrs Crompton: The Year 12’s are accepting of individuals and are inclusive to ensure a strong sense of belonging.
Mrs Lombardi: Gentle and compassionate
Mr McAuley: Generous, laid-back and have great potential.
Mr Lenaghan: They have met all challenges and welcome those that aren’t ‘like them’. They have a strong sense of social justice.
These collective qualities certainly echo the characteristics of a Prendivillian. We wish our Year 12 students all the best for a hopeful, optimistic and happy future where the time at Prendiville has helped prepare them in some way.
INAUGURAL TOUR D'VILLE 2018
As part of the Year 12 final days our year 12 students participated in a fun team event we hope becomes a legacy event for our students. For the inaugural event the running of the ways provided a meaningful and energetic event for our students as part of their conclusion to secondary school. Thank you to Ms Sarah Fogliani for coordinating the event which our Year 12 students participated in with great energy and teamwork. Our thanks also go to Baker’s Delight for their kind generosity in supplying the rolls for the sausage sizzle. Congratulations to McAuley House who won the inaugural event.

STRATEGIC DIRECTIONS 2019 – 2021 - INVITATION TO CONTRIBUTE
Over the past three years our College development has been guided by the document Beyond 30: Strategic Directions 2016 - 2018. With the goals and strategies of 'Beyond 30' nearing completion, it is time to set the College’s Strategic Priorities for 2019 – 2021.
The College identifies six overarching Strategic Priorities as the scaffold for strategic action from 2019.
1: Discipleship – Mission and Catholic Identity
2: Learning – Teaching and Learning
3: Accountability - Well-being
4: Engagement - Community Engagement and Partnerships
5: A Catholic Professional Learning Community
6: Stewardship and Sustainability
The first four priority areas are guided by the Catholic Education Western Australia’s system focus on Learning, Engagement, Accountability and Discipleship (LEAD). The College has added the additional priority areas of:
- A Catholic Learning Community which focuses on priorities for addressing staff performance and development in the context of a Catholic school.
- Stewardship and Sustainability which incorporates our commitment to long-term sustainability through responsible strategic thinking, planning and action.
INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE
Parents and guardians are invited to participate in two important parts of the strategic planning process:
1. FOCUS GROUPS
Parent/Guardian engagement is an important component of the planning process and an invitation is extended to parents and guardians to attend focus group planning sessions. Thank you to those that attended the first session on 16 October. The second date for the focus groups is:
Wednesday 24 October (repeat session) from 6.00 to 7.00 pm in the Gateway.
The format for these sessions will be a structured SWOT analysis and online survey. Please RSVP your attendance to these sessions by email to leishele.pearce@cewa.edu.au
2. VISION FOR LEARNING
In addition to the focus groups, all parents will be invited to participate in the Vision for Learning Online Survey called the Diagnostic Inventory of School Alignment (DISA). This survey has a focus on the strategic priority of Learning. Parents will receive an email with instructions for participation in this survey which will be open from Monday 15 October until Monday 22 October.
On behalf of the College Leadership Team and College Board I warmly extend an invitation to participate in the two important processes outlined above.

ENROLMENTS YEAR 7 2021
Current families - do you have your sibling listed for the Year 7 2021 intake? The enrolment process starts in February 2019. Please complete an application on the College website or contact Kim Craig by email kim.craig@cewa.edu.au to confirm.
COLLEGE FAMILY FEE ACCOUNTS
The College Board developed a flexible solution for families to meet their child’s education costs by spreading the payments throughout the year. Unless arrangements have been made with the Finance Office, College fee accounts must be finalised by 31 October 2018. The College has an obligation to meet their costs and requires parents to honour their commitments to payment of their fee accounts.
As per the College Board Policy, outstanding accounts with no arrangements in place, may reluctantly be sent to a private debt collection agency. This course of action may incur additional fees and charges that are payable by the family. I urge any family that are currently experiencing genuine financial stress and are unable to meet their commitment to contact the College Finance Officer Mrs Naomi Agosta on 9301 6242 to arrange an appointment.

CREATIVE ARTS
St. Simon Peter Production of 'The Little Mermaid'
Earlier in Term 3, St. Simon Peter held its spectacular Disney Junior production. In close partnership, Prendiville students gave graciously of their time and spirit in the areas of photography, video, dance choreography, makeup, prop construction, backstage management and the painting of a large banner for the foyer of the Performing Arts Centre.
It was very endearing to have many former St. Simon Peter students wanting to 'give back' service in gratitude to assist Mrs Natalie Templeton and Mrs Michelle Oliver. Well done to everyone involved, it was a superb production. The Redmond Theatre truly came to life with the magic of theatre, song and dance.

Creative Arts - 2018 Yolande Frank Art Award Winners
We were fortunate to have four students chosen as finalists by the judging panel of the United Nation’s Association of Australia (WA Division), Yolande Frank Art Awards. Caitlin Nihil (Year 8), Mija Belamide, Nicola Grobbelaar and Madison Snelling (Year 10) were selected by Creative Arts staff to represent Prendiville at the annual awards and all four girls made the final group of twenty-two students.
We are thrilled to announce that at the start of the school holidays, Madison Snelling was awarded first place and Nicola Grobbelaar was runner-up at the awards ceremony in Subiaco. This is the second year in a row that Madison has won the Yolande Frank Art Award, a fantastic achievement. The artworks by all four students will be published in the 2019 Human Rights Education Calendar. Congratulations girls, as the Program Director, Mr Rees Barrett, commented, “the diversity and quality of student creative voices were most impressive.”
Creative Arts Exhibition
The 2018 Creative Arts Exhibition was held last month in the foyer of the Performing Arts Centre and showcased the exceptional work of our talented students from Years 7 to 12.
It was an excellent display, and it was terrific to see so many members of the Prendiville Community come through to view the exhibition throughout the week. Thank you to guest judge Miss Verity Palmer, the music students who performed on the night, the Creative Living staff and students for catering the event and Ben Collins and the Creative Arts staff and for setting up the showcase and for their assistance on opening night. Congratulations to all the students who received awards.

P&F
P&F Update – What’s on and Expressions of Interest for Treasurer Required
The P&F are in full swing, planning for a busy few months to close out this year and to kick start 2019.
Term 4 is the time where we call for requests from school departments for specific funding to support some of the unique requirements they have. Earlier this year the P&F funded whiteboard tables for the Mathematics Department, a laser cutter for TIDE and fitted out the Gateway with AV equipment so that it can be used as a presentation centre. Determining how the funds are distributed is one of the most rewarding aspects of being a member of the P&F as we can make meaningful, long term contributions to improving the school and the learning experiences our children have every day. We look forward to receiving the funding requests over the next few weeks and reviewing these early in Term 1.
The planning of the P&F events for 2019 is well underway also. Given the success of the inaugural Prendi Summer Fest in Term 1, we will be doing this again next year as well as the Easter Raffle and the Quiz Night in Term 3. The focus for 2019 is about consolidating the work we’ve done to date and to focus on building community through successful events and interactions. If you have attended a P&F event over the past few years you will know that they’re excellent opportunities to meet up with other families and friends and have fun. We are always looking for volunteers to help out so if you have some time to give please reach out to a committee member to discuss where you can contribute.
We’ve had the wonderful support of Sam Bresciani as the Treasurer for the P&F over the past six years. Sam has been instrumental in ensuring that the P&F budget is tracked effectively and has provided insight on all aspects of our financial responsibilities. Sam would like to hand the portfolio over as she has increased responsibility at work so it is time for us to find a new Treasurer so that an effective handover can be completed through Terms 1 and 2. If you have an accounting or bookkeeping background and would like to volunteer for this role, please contact Denny Piovesan on rdpiovesan@bigpond.com.au to discuss.

With the jump station destroyed and their resources scarce, the only option is to return to Kerenza—but who knows what they’ll find seven months after the invasion? Meanwhile, Kady’s cousin, Asha, survived the initial BeiTech assault and has joined Kerenza’s ragtag underground resistance. When Rhys—an old flame from Asha’s past—reappears on Kerenza, the two find themselves on opposite sides of the conflict. With time running out, a final battle will be waged on land and in space, heroes will fall and hearts will be broken.
Storymaze 1: The Ultimate Wave by Terry Denton
OK! So you're not sure whether you want to read this book or not. I'M NOT GOING TO TELL YOU WHAT YOU'RE MISSING OUT ON if you don't read it. (You won't believe me anyway.)(Besides I haven't read it.) I'm not going to tell you how FUNNY this BOOK is or that it was not TESTED ON ANIMALS or that 16 DOLPHINS DIED when the forests were cut down to make the paper for this book. I'm not GOING TO tell you that this book is about SURFING and that it contains a story with heroes of either SEX; it looks at parallel universes, BLOOD, VIOLENCE and stuff. (If read backwards it makes no sense at all.) The Venuzuelan Tribune said: 'We don't like books with lots of pictures!' The Daily Bugle said: 'Why bother reading it? None of it's real.' The Flying Scotsman wrote: 'I read it from cover to cover but didn't worry about the bit in between.' The Egyptian Mummy wrote: 'I was wrapped!'
Paper Planes by Steve Worland
Dylan is an imaginative twelve-year-old boy who discovers that his talent for folding and flying paper planes could take him to the World Paper Plane Championship. With a great challenge soaring ahead and a goal to fly into the number one spot, there's no telling how far he can go.
Art Display
Come and have a look at Madison Snelling’s award winning art installation 'Empire: Another Man’s Trash is Another Man’s Treasure' which is being displayed in the library. Madison won first prize in the 3 Dimensional category of the Angelico Awards for Years 7, 8, 9 and 10. The sculpture won the prize under the title 'Sound Fragmentation' and is a statement about the impact of commercialism and capitalism on weaker members of society. Well done Madison!

Special Consideration & Educational Access Schemes
If you’ve experienced something that’s had a negative impact on your marks in Year 11 & 12, DON’T GIVE UP! There are schemes designed to help you gain recognition for your work, so read on:
Special consideration isn’t designed to give you an advantage and it’s not a privilege. It simply makes applying to University fair for everyone.
These schemes give universities the opportunity to assess the impact of your individual situation on your studies and results, and if they consider that you’ve been negatively impacted, but still shown determination and hard work, an adjustment or change your ATAR or OP results may be made.
So if you’ve been sick, injured, grieving, live in a regional or remote area, or spent time caring for another family member applying for special consideration could help your chances of being offered a spot at uni.
You can apply directly to individual institutions (details can be found on their websites), but often you can simply include the application as part of your general application to University.
We know how hard it can be to understand the process – that’s why we’ve done the hard work, read through all the relevant information and called the processing bodies themselves to clarify what you need to do. This blog covers what you need to know, but if you’re confused or want more help please get in touch with the processing body in your state or university directly to find out more.
HOW TO FIND SCHEMES AND CHECK IF YOU ARE ELIGIBLE
TISC does this process for you automatically. Fill in your course application (remember to answer all the questions), and the information you’ve provided is used to work out any ATAR adjustments you’re eligible for.
Current Year 12 students will receive a University Admission Advice Letter (UAAL), it’ll tell you if you’re eligible for a pathway for one or more universities, and what your Selection Rank(s) for each university will be.
WHEN WILL YOU FIND OUT IF YOU’VE BEEN SUCCESSFUL?
You won’t be notified of a YES or NO response to your application; you’ll just get an offer as part of the undergraduate offer rounds. Here’s how the system works:
1. Once you’ve submitted your application for special consideration, the processing bodies will check that the forms have been filled out correctly and that all the necessary documentation has been supplied and matches the requirements.
2.Then your ATAR/OP results are published your special consideration application along with the course application will be forwarded to the Universities you’ve applied to on your preferences list.
3.Universities have their own weighting systems that they apply to each category / section / reason of the special considerations application. They will increase your selection rank for the course you have applied for (this is called an equity adjustment), OR they will allocate you a place reserved for EAS students.
4.So, your university choice + course choice + special consideration category + number & quality of applications in your cohort = the adjustment to your ATAR / OP score
What does all this mean? You won’t be told about any adjustments made to your score, but if, for example, you applied to do a Law degree at Monash University which required an ATAR of 95 and your ATAR result was 94, yet you receive an offer, you can assume that your special consideration application got you over the line.
TIPS
- Make sure you allow yourself enough time to complete special consideration applications.
- Getting together all the documentation / supporting information can take several weeks and the cut-off dates aren’t too far away. So get cracking.
Special consideration probably won’t apply for things such as:
- not completing secondary school
- changing school subjects by choice, resulting in you not meeting entry requirements
- missed time from school for activities that are a personal choice (for example, sport, musical or cultural activities)
HERE’S HOW TO APPLY IN YOUR STATE:
TISC have made it easy so there’s no need to apply separately – just make sure you answer all the questions on your course application and provide full and accurate details where necessary.
Want to apply for uni in a different state? You can find all the same details for every state and territory on our blog – Study Work Grow.
DEADLINES
WA – 11pm on 12 December 2018 is the cut off for first main round applications, and if you’re applying through TISC your special consideration is automatically part of this application.
