Mile High Middle School is home to 500 amazing students, 45 dedicated staff, and a Grand Old Cottonwood Tree. Recently PUSD was advised that the massive old cottonwood tree on the south end of the Mile High Middle School sports field could present a future risk to students and visitors. The tree is beautiful and a part of Prescott’s history. However, it is likely over 200 years old, and the limbs weigh thousands of pounds. Years ago, in an effort to preserve the life of the tree and keep visitors to the Mile High MS field safe, a hollow portion of the trunk was shored up with concrete. Over the years, numerous limbs have been trimmed to improve the health of the tree. Currently, many enormous limbs are horizontal to or even growing toward the ground. Every living thing has a lifespan. The Grand Old Cottonwood Tree has already far outlived an expected lifespan for this type of tree, and may be less structurally sound than it once was.
PUSD has consulted with a number of professional arborists and with our liability insurance company. Their conclusion is that one of two things must happen to increase safety for future visitors and students. Either:
1) The tree must be cut down and removed. --OR--
2) The tree must have potentially problematic limbs trimmed, and the immediate area around the tree must be fenced to prevent climbing.
After much consultation, PUSD has chosen to continue to try to preserve the life of the Grand Old Cottonwood Tree by contracting with professional arborists to trim problem limbs, and by fencing the tree area for the safety of students and visitors. Access to the field and use of the track will be maintained. Next time you visit Mile High Middle School, give a wave to the historic tree that has shared space with thousands of energetic students for the past 85 years!
