What does AAPI stand for?
AAPI is the shorthand for Asian American Pacific Islander. Sometimes AANHPI is written instead of AAPI. AANHPI stands for Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander.
AAPI Heritage Month Timeline
- 1587: The first documented instance of Asian people entering the Americas (Filipinos in California)
- 1635: Indian people were first documented entering the United States in Jamestown
- 1778: Chinese people were first documented entering Hawaii
- 1788: Native Hawaiians were first documented entering the continental Unites States in Oregon
- 1806: Japanese people were first documented entering Hawaii
- 1884: Korean people were first documented entering the United States
- 1898: Guam is ceded to the United States
- 1898 - 1946: The Philippines were a U.S. possession
- 1900s: Chamorro people were first documented migrating to Hawaii and California
- 1900: Hawaii is annexed to the United States
- 1904: American Samoa is ceded to the United States
- 1912: Vietnamese people are first documented in the United States
- 1970: former congressional staffer Jeanie Jew approached Representative Frank Horton with the idea of designating a month to recognize Asian/Pacific Americans
- 1977: Representatives Horton and Norman Y. Mineta introduced a House bill to recognize the first ten days in May as Asian/Pacific American Week
- 1990: George H. W. Bush extended Asian-Pacific American Week to a Month
- 1992: Asian/Pacific American Month is officially recognized as the month of May
- 2009: Barack Obama changed the name to Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
