Consultant, Steve Barkley, visits Manheim Central School District to Focus on Coaching
On September 18th, administrators and coaches had the opportunity to work with Steve Barkley as he visited Manheim Central High School and HC Burgard Elementary. The focus was on conferencing and coaching. Mr. Barkley engaged in a pre-conference with a teacher at each school while the administrative team and coaches observed. Following the pre-conference, the team visited classrooms doing walkthroughs and then Mr. Barkley followed up with modeling a post-conference with the same teacher from the pre-conference. Many thanks to the teachers who were involved in this work as they helped to create a learning opportunity for administrators and coaches!
For the past 35 years, Steve Barkley has served as a consultant to school districts, teacher organizations, state departments of education, and colleges and universities nationally and internationally, facilitating the changes necessary for them to reach students and successfully prepare them for the 21st century.
Mr. Barkley will return to Manheim Central on December 7th when he will visit both Doe Run Elementary and the Middle School. The focus will again be on creating a culture of coaching and improvement through observing student behaviors during walkthroughs. Mr. Barkley will again model a pre-conference and post conference for administrators and coaches in December. A link to Steve Barkley's Blog can be found below:
At Home Reading Begins on Monday!
Monday, September 25th will be the first date of counting steps for students both in school and at home using the American Reading Company materials. Home Contracts for all students, along with leveled books, should go home with all students on Monday, September 25th! If a teacher has not yet finished leveling all students, please use the level from last year which can be found within School Pace or your best professional judgement as to the most appropriate level; but, do not delay sending home books on September 25th. All classrooms should begin on September 25th! Students are expected to earn 2 steps per day at school and 1 step at home on 6 nights per week. Steps can be entered into School Pace on either a daily basis or on a weekly basis. Should you have any questions, please reach out to Melissa Troiano, Tracy Fasick, or your building principals.
Reading Specialists Begin Working With Students on Monday, September 25th!
This year, reading specialists will begin meeting with students for Intervention time beginning on Monday, September 25th. This is at least three weeks earlier than the past few years. The student groups have been based on the data that is currently available. Thus, there could be some changes to the student groups that are being seen by the reading specialists as more data is solidified. Rather than postpone the start date, we want teachers to be aware that these groups are flexible and that students may be exited as we finalize the data. Reading Specialists will let classroom teachers know which students from your classroom will be seen during the intervention block of time and if there are any changes to student groups in the weeks ahead.
