Positivity Project
Under the guiding principles of our districtwide initiative, the Positivity Project, the #PositivityinAction mindset is our top priority. These past three weeks we focused on the character strengths of FAIRNESS and APPRECIATION OF BEAUTY AND EXCELLENCE.
People with the character strength of fairness believe that all people have value. They approach situations with an unbiased mindset and treat everyone with respect.
Coaches are always analyzing player performances, demonstrating skills, providing encouragement and honesty with both players and parents. They teach fair play to their teammates and opponents. This includes modeling and demanding good sportsmanship. Winning isn't everything. Accepting bad calls by refs, treating every player the same, and applying team rules to all players is.
We are truly grateful for our strong team of fall, winter, and spring coaching staff who teach moral ethics through modeling good sportsmanship and fairness.
People with the character strength of appreciation of beauty and excellence notice and value the world’s beauty and people’s skills. They don’t take things for granted.
This past Thursday we showcased Shorian artists at our Virtual K-12 District Art Show: https://tinyurl.com/lspsartshow. Approximately 35-40 pieces, 230 in total, were displayed from each building, hand-selected based on exemplary skills, creativity, and innovative ideas including Scholastic award winners!
The Student Exhibition is online for the first time which gives our community the opportunity to watch and rewatch this amazing display of talent, perfectly timed during our Shorians Got Talent features. The majority of work to create this presentation was done by students, with guidance from their teachers.
2021 is throwing a lot of challenges our way. Tapping into our positive relationships and our character strengths, by demonstrating #PositivityInAction, will be critical in helping us be resilient and successful in the face of these tough times.
Looking forward, our upcoming character strengths are PURPOSE (4/25-5/1) and LEADERSHIP (5/2-5/8).

Innovation
Earth Day Recognized Districtwide
Earth Day was this past Thursday and Lake Shore Public Schools made art to celebrate! We partnered with EOS Cafe to decorate recyclable coffee sleeves with Earth Day inspired designs. Afterall, EOS means ECO!
Preschool classes from our Early Childhood Center, Ms. Dmochowski from Kennedy Middle School, and Ms. Vitale from Masonic Heights Elementary School had their students create this Earth Day art! Using 500 coffee sleeves from EOS Cafe, each student decorated two with eco-friendly messages.
Shorians participated in local park cleanups. Although there is no monetary compensation, volunteers enjoyed many benefits. Our 200+ student participants took pleasure in the rewarding fulfillment of serving their community and making the Brys Park, Blossom Heath/Wahby Park, Kyte Monroe, Gaffke Park, and Memorial Park better places to visit.
Nino Phillips, Grounds Maintenance employee for Saint Clair Shores Parks and Rec, was impressed with the kids. "This is a great thing they are doing and it is so nice to see them contributing to the community."
Classrooms across the district were having conversations and completing Earth Day activities such as this poster project in Earth Science at Kennedy Middle School. These 6th graders read an article about how-to stop air and water pollution and synthesized a list of 50 ways to save the Earth. Using this information, they choose to illustrate 5 important ways, like recycling and turning off lights, recommended by Cenza Zerlilli and Lukas Storbeck.
Recyclable and reusable products are great ways to reduce one's carbon footprint. These projects do not only foster creativity and resourcefulness, but also teaches about making smart decisions. Let's all be a little more conscious about our Earth!
KMS Community Garden
Never underestimate the healing power of a quiet moment in the garden. With a red and white color scheme, even our beautiful pansies will soon bloom to exhibit Shorian Pride.
Our Kennedy Middle School Community Garden is located next to the West Parking lot in front of the Adult Education Building. Community members have the opportunity to rent a garden bed for the summer to grow food or flowers for themselves. Some of our members don’t have the space to grow their own food and this is the perfect place for them to do so. We hope to add more beds and a fence in the future. The rental cost is $25 for the season.
This price provides the following:
-A garden plot to grow produce and/or flowers for harvest by plot holders.
-Access to water for irrigation through a system of hand-held hoses.
-Access to general garden tools such as shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows.
-Compost bins and/or an area for disposal of garden waste.
Contact Rebecca Malloy, Community Garden Manager, at rmalloy@lsps.org for additional information about starting your own plot.
Listening Session for Teens
Rep. Hertel and CARE of Southeast Michigan are partnering to put together an upcoming listening session for our teens to share their thoughts on how they’re doing, what they’re worried about, and how our community can better support them. The listening session will be held Monday, May 17 from 6:30-7:30pm.
Pizza Promotion
In the effort to support local pizza businesses while preparing for a grand STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK celebration in May, we're promoting a different kind of COUNTING CONTEST and this isn't an April Fool's gimmick!
Share the name of a Lake Shore Public Schools staff member who is putting in extra work to connect with kids by writing it on your receipt (or piece of paper) and placing it inside the bucket or asking an employee to do so on any takeout or delivery order at Johnny Z's Pizzera (28210 Harper), Paisano's Pizza (30019 Harper), or Jet's Pizza (30114 Harper) during the month of April. Winner, by random draw, will receive TWO FREE MEDIUM 2-TOPPING PIZZAS!
We love our staff TWO PIZZAS and this is one way we'll be counting on you to show it. Another way would be to vote LSPS teachers as the best of the best in this contest created by the Macomb Daily.
CELEBRATION
Aguilar-Bertini Donates Hair to Wigs4Kids
We are excited to express our gratitude to Chris Aguilar-Bertini of Violet Elementary for donating 8-11 inches of his hair to Maggie's Wigs4Kids over Spring Break. This intentional act of kindness will enable a wigmaker in California to make a wig for a child who lost their hair due to a medical condition such as cancer.
Chris chose to let his hair grow long because he has been involved in acting since age 5. This passion, which can transform Chris into someone else, prompted him to think about wigs.
Our districtwide Positivity Project program served as a reminder for Chris that "by doing good things other people may be inspired to similarly do good things." These are the words from his mother, Cheryl Young, who hopes her son's efforts increase awareness to prevent and treat cancer in children.
Maggie's Wigs 4 Kids Wellness Center and Salon is a local grassroots non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that provides wigs and support services at no charge to children and young adults experiencing hair loss due to cancer, alopecia, trichotillomania, burns and other disorders. Our wig recipients, also known as Ambassadors, range in age from 3 to 18, and are located throughout Michigan. For more information about Wigs 4 Kids, visit https://www.wigs4kids.org/.
LSECC Receives Quality Rating
Our Lake Shore Early Childhood Center has received a quality rating from Great Start to Quality, Michigan's quality rating and improvement system for child care and preschool, preparing children to succeed in school and in life.
Great Start to Quality rates the level of quality of all licensed and registered child care and preschool programs in Michigan.
"Making sure we provide children in our care with the best experience possible, is not only our job, it's our privilege," said Kelly Biondo, Early Childhood Coordinator. "By participating in Great Start to Quality we earn recognition for our hard work. We also get ongoing support and training so we can keep improving the quality of care we provide."
At this time, 49 states currently have a quality rating system underway or else in the works. This is happening because research shows learning begins at birth, and high-quality child care and preschool can help children succeed in school, work and life. In Michigan, programs and providers can earn between one and five stars, based on the number of state standards they meet.

This marks the fifth year Michigan’s high school juniors have taken the SAT. Most SAT scores will be released on Wednesday, May 5th. To access scores, visit https://studentscores.collegeboard.org/home. The SAT is 3 hours and costs $52 to retake.
