Counseling Corner with Ms. Amber
We are off and on our way into a great school year! The first 6 weeks of learning have allowed our students to explore our whole school expectations, set routines and develop classroom/school routines.
One very important topic that all students Kindergarten-5th grade learn about in the beginning of the school year is anti bullying lessons. This unit is well underway and will continue for the next couple of weeks.
Students learn the rule of the three R’s. Recognize, Refuse, and Report. We recognize (see/hear) unkind things happening, we refuse to allow it to continue (say no), and we report the actions to an adult. This is the language we use at BCS and our hope is that you will continue this language at home. This will show our students that we are a community and are all on the same page.
Students are learning how to be assertive (getting your needs met in a kind and respectful way), how to be an upstander (to stand up for peers and get help), and the difference between a mean action vs. bullying.
An important part about bullying prevention education is to understand that actions of bullying do not make a person a bad person. When bullying happens, it means children may need support and education on social and emotional ways of interacting with others and new strategies of communication. We want to help everyone in these situations and find the best support for everyone involved.
Thank you for helping our school community feel safe, supported and welcome!
Ms. Amber

Sharice's Big Voice
This picture book autobiography tells the triumphant story of Sharice Davids, one of the first Native American women elected to Congress, and the first LGBTQ congressperson to represent Kansas. Sharice always liked to talk and she liked to learn by listening to others. Sharice wanted to use her voice to make a difference. Sharice knows that everyone deserves to have a voice.
