Hello Foster's Finest Families,
I wanted to thank the PTO and the community for their acknowledgement of Principal Day this week. I truly was surprised and did not expect such recognition. More than the gift, I received MANY handmade cards from students and a book created by first graders detailing what principals do and what they would do if they were the principal. My father has a box with every card my sister or I made for him throughout the years, and the box now has cards made by his grandchildren. There is nothing like receiving a hand made card from a child. I have a box at home from my career as a teacher and as a principal. Those cards mean so much to me. My heart is full today.
Thank you to everyone who celebrated Star Wars Day here at Foster today. It was so fun to see all of the students. I was eight years old and sat in the front row when the movie came out in a packed theater in 1977. I remember being with my best elementary school friends and being amazed at the movie I had just seen. I know not everyone is a science fiction fan, but it certainly was special to see so many students excited to be here this morning coming into the school.
May the Force Be With You!
Mr. Scheufele
CAMP INVENTION CANCELLED
I regret to inform you that after careful consideration, Camp Invention at South School has been cancelled this summer due to low enrollment.
I understand that this change in plans may cause significant inconvenience for you. I want to express how disappointed we are by this turn of events.
If you have registered your child and sent in a check, I will be contacting you directly over the next week to confirm how you would like me to return your check. Please reach out to sheinlein@hinghamschools.org if you have any further questions.
I look forward to organizing Camp Invention next summer and hosting it back at the new Foster School in summer of 2025!
Juneteenth Student Art Contest – Call for Student Submissions
In 2024, the national theme for Black History Month was “African Americans and the Arts,” intended to highlight the many impacts Black Americans have had on visual arts, music, cultural movements, and more. As part of the celebration of Juneteenth in Hingham this year, the Hingham Unity Council is inviting all students in grades Pre K-12 who live and/or attend school on the South Shore to share their views on the theme: What does the rich cultural legacy of Black Americans mean to me and/or my community? Students are invited to express or reflect on this through a work of visual or performance art, an essay or other written work. Students may submit an essay, poem, a piece of visual art (drawing, painting, sculpture – any medium of expression is welcome!), a video or original song or other performance to the Juneteenth committee by Friday, May 31, 2024. More details at https://hinghamunity.org/student-art-contest-call-submissions-2024/

PTO NEWS
We kicked off the week by honoring our very own Mr. Scheufele for National School Principal Appreciation Day. In addition to leading the school to success each and every day, he wears many other hats. He’s a Traffic Control Officer, Substitute Para, General Contractor, Slime Aficionado, Robotics Master and Friend to ALL. You’re “Nacho Average Principal” and we appreciate you today and every day! Starting Monday we are excited to celebrate Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week. A very special THANK YOU to Kate Dewey for spearheading all of it! Please see below for a list of upcoming events as we start to close out the school year. Mark your calendars for Friday May 17th @ 9am which will be our last PTO meeting of the year where we will be announcing the new PTO Board and Committee Leads. We want to invite all of our parents who have supported us in anyway this year to join us at Local 02045 in Hull on Thursday May 30th at 7pm. It doesn’t matter whether you contributed $1 or 1hr of your time we couldn’t do this without your volunteerism and generosity. Have a great weekend! Don’t forget to buy your bricks if you want to be a part of the hardscape at the new school!
As a PSA we wanted to share some information with you on behalf of “Wait Until 8th, Hingham” @waituntil8th_hingham. This a nationwide campaign that aims to raise awareness about the importance of delaying the introduction of smartphones to children until they reach the end of 8th grade. If you would like your child to have a basic phone that just calls and texts, you still can sign the pledge! The basic phone avoids many of the distractions and dangers of the smartphone. Once 10 families from your child's grade and school sign the pledge, Wait Until 8th will send an email notifying the group the pledge is in effect and connecting you to the families who have signed. This connection will help you support one another on waiting and will decrease the pressure felt by kids and parents alike over having a smartphone. When filling out the pledge on WU8, simply look up your school in the search bar. All Hingham schools are already in the WU8 database and can be found by searching “East”, “Foster,” etc.
To sign the pledge and show your support, please visit https://www.waituntil8th.org/take-the-pledge
Have a great weekend!
