8th Grade Transition Meeting, Monday, June 3
8th Grade Events Highlight June
Our 8th graders will be busy in June! Following is some information for our 8th Grade students and families as they prepare to make the transition to high school!
- Wednesday, June 12--8th Grade students will go to the high school for a 2 hour orientation with a tour given by HHS students. Students will return to the middle school to eat lunch, and then attend HHS Class Day ceremony in the high school gym.
- Thursday, June 13--Its back to HHS for our soon to be Grizzlies. They will have a chance to experience their schedule for next year and meet their teachers. There will be other events and presentations for them on this day.
- Friday, June 14--Our 8th Graders will start their day with a mandatory practice for the moving up assembly later that day. Students will start at HMS at their normal time. Depending upon weather, the high school will either be practicing at Olympic Stadium, or their gym. If the high school needs the gym, we will practice in the HMS gym. At the end of practice (9:30-10:00) Students have the option to go home with parental permission needed for that, or to stay at school. Students need to be back at the HS Gym by 11:10 so we can ensure they are all there. The ceremony begins at 11:30 a.m. After the ceremony there is time for pictures, a "to go" treat, and 8th graders are dismissed for the day.
- 8th Graders will do their locker clean out on Monday, June 17. Please make sure to clear fines and return any library books or school materials. Dismissal is at 1:15 for all students on Monday, and it is our field day.
- Last day of school is June 18.

Athletics: It is never too soon....
It is never too soon to ensure your student has all of the necessary forms and current physical needed to take part in sports next year. For newcomers to Hoquiam Middle School, we use Final Forms to house our athletic paperwork, and all forms must be completed and the athlete cleared before the first day of practice for the student to participate. Our Fall Sports are 7th and 8th grade Football, Girls Soccer, and Cross Country. Practices will begin in late August, and once we have those dates we will send out the information.
If you are looking for Final Forms, you can find it at this web address: https://hoquiam-wa.finalforms.com/
Parents need to create an account. Here is where you can find directions for making an account: https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/sportshub2-uploads-prod/files/sites/2656/2020/12/14094353/Hoquiam-FinalForms_ParentPlaybook.pdf

Counselor's Corner
May has gone by super fast. The school spent two weeks testing for the state test, SBA; and the 8th grade had an extra week testing science (WCAS). All students worked very hard!
We are already seeing anxieties reaching high levels with the ending of school and the up-coming transitions. Talking to your child now about how they are feeling about any transition that is coming helps them to understand transitions are a normal part of growing up. Giving them the tools now to understand and handle transitions will help as they grow into adults. I have included this great article about transitions.
Our 8th grade students will be practicing their schedule (not set in stone) June 12 and 13 as they spend the day at the high school. Our 5th grade students will be coming to the Middle School on June 13 for lunch and a tour. I know both grades are very anxious and nervous. But we are all very excited!!
Hope Squad
We have been talking about the difference between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset. How do we change our fixed mindset on an activity to a growth mindset? How do we talk ourselves out of the negative talk? How can we build up our friends? The team has been challenged with finding an activity that they may never have tried or are scared to try and try it. Even as adults it can be very hard to change our fixed mindset to an open mind about a topic.
Another topic we have discussed recently is the R in QPR. Yes, they have been trained how to speak with thier peers who are feeling sad, unwanted, or suicidal thoughts, and they do a great job. But what is being forgotten is the R-- REFER. It is very important that our students are talking with an adult about what they are hearing from their peers. Please help remind them they can always come to you or another safe adult.
Attendance
It’s never too late to come back to school. #ShowingUpMatters, no matter how long you have been away. #ShowingUpMatters #AttendTodayAchieveTomorrow
Our homeroom for the best attendance was Mr. Niemi's class!
We are down to 11 days!! Please make sure you are calling Mrs. Webber to excuse absences, 360-538-8221 or ewebber@hoquiam.net.

Thank you Mrs. Schmidt & Congratulations HMS Music!
Two amazing end of the year concerts along with a parade where students got to experience marching for the first time ended our formal music year. There are still some performances locally at retirement homes and at Emerson for various ensembles. A special thank you to Ms. Schmidt, who will be moving on to the wide open skies of Montana next year. In her time here, she had a variety of new experiences for our middle school music students, including forming a pep band for basketball games, and marching in a parade, as well as several great concerts and performances, as well as her great Veteran's Day assemblies. We wish her all the best, and thank her for sharing her passion for music.

May Rotary Students of the Month
Each month Hoquiam Rotary honors two 8th grade students who embody the virtues that Rotary stands for: Service to others, citizenship, commitment to excellence, and hard work. The students are honored at a monthly luncheon, after being selected by our 8th grade staff.
At the May Rotary Luncheon, we honored 2 students that embody these traits, and I am proud to introduce them to you!
Our first student of the month for May is Jack Christensen. Jack was nominated based on his citizenship, and hard work in the classroom, and his friendly attitude towards other students and staff. . He is the son of Brooke and Andrew Christensen. He has four siblings, Rylan, Markus, Rowan, and Morgun. His favorite classes at HMS are Math and History at all three grade levels. Jack is a member of our track team and one of a small handful that takes classes at the high school. In his spare time, he enjoys playing video games and hanging out with friends. He is proud of his abilities in math, and hopes to parlay that into a career in the future. Next year he is looking forward to all of the new classes he will be exposed to as well as thinking that the high school breakfasts are the bomb! Well done, Jack!
Our next Student of the Month for March is Madison Gordon. She was selected for her citizenship, service to others, scholarship and participation by her teachers. She is the daughter of Lauri Gordon. Madison has three siblings, Jake, Kort, and Sidney. Her favorite classes at HMS were 6th grade history with Mr. Pelan, Jr. and 8th grade math with Mr. Gwin. She is involved with National Junior Honor Society, Leadership, Band, Volleyball, Track, Soccer, and Basketball at HMS. In her off time she enjoys art, cooking, and hanging out with her brother Kort. She is proud of being a member of the National Junior Honor Society. Madison is looking forward to being able to be outside between classes, playing high school sports, and the open campus next year in high school.
Way to go Madison!
