Message From Principal Engdall
Greetings Shaw Montessori!
This week we were fortunate to have a group of indigenous peoples visit. Many of them are parents of our school community. We even had a student performing. They shared dances, songs, incredible traditional dress, culture, instruments, and blessings. It was a treasure for our elementary and middle school students.
We look forward to entertaining you this week at our Holiday Tax Credit concerts. Tuesday, 12/6 our kindergarten through 3rd graders will perform for you and on Thursday, December 8th our 4th-8th graders. You may donate cash or check at the tax credit table that evening or if you prefer to donate online you will find that link here: https://www.phxschools.org/tax-credit We hope you take time to eat and to visit the book fair, the outdoor environment, and the garden. The love and generosity of our students and family will be evident everywhere that evening. Thank you so much!
***We ask that you stay for the entire concert. The students will return to their classrooms with their teachers to wait for you. When there are early departures, movement and talking it distracts from the work of our children. Please be respectful. Also remember to bring your own chairs and blankets. That is the only seating that will be available that evening.
Afterschool classes end on December 9th for the semester. New classes will be posted in the See Shaw Shine on December 11th. Registration will open then.
Our school Spelling Bee will be held on Wednesday, December 21st in the school cafeteria. Spellers will begin competing at 9:30.
Wishing you the best,
Principal Engdall

Garden Update
Greetings!
We had a wonderful week in the garden. We began our egg scramble cooking block. The students collected the eggs from the chickens and green onions and cilantro from the garden. We made a cheesy egg scramble served on a slice of French baguette. Since children have such a sophisticated palate, they mostly enjoyed the buttered bread. Nonetheless, it has been a success thus far. We will continue with this recipe until the holiday break.
Next week is our holiday concert! Please stop by the elementary garden for some homemade treats. We will be serving salad and fried vegetables. We will also be selling bouquets for $5.00 and making s’mores on our fire pit! If you don’t like salad, you’ll probably enjoy a s’more, and vice versa. The food will be prepped by students from Leinbach’s class and the 7th and 8th graders. We will also be serving plenty of holiday mirth! Ho ho ho!
Final update on the goats:
After speaking with Principal Engdall and farmer Maya it was decided that we will host the goats after the holiday break. I PROMISE they are arriving in January. The plan is to host a pregnant female goat. She will give birth to the kids on campus! What an awesome experience for the kids! We’ll let the kids grow up a little, forage on the Bermuda grass, and then we’ll send them back to the farm to be sold to a loving family. Make sure you thank farmer Maya when you see her at the farmer’s market.
There are still some upper elementary classes that need vermicomposting bins. Here’s a link to the Home Depot totes if you would like to sponsor your child’s classroom:
Here’s my email in case you need to reach me: james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org
Home Depot gift cards are always appreciated. Continue bringing your aluminum cans, coffee grounds, eggshells, and bottle caps. You can leave them on the table outside the front office except for the bottle caps. Have your child drop them in their classroom bin.
If you have any flagstone cuts or wood cuts, we will also take them. We will also accept any tool donations for the field garden and/or ODE.
Enjoy your weekend!
Mr. Moench
