Message From Superintendent Mueller
Good Afternoon, CUSD.
It’s amazing to think that we have only been in school for less than one month. It’s so great to see our teachers and students making connections and fully settling into routines. Our elementary choir and band are still taking new students, so if your child would like to participate in these before-school opportunities, please see the flyers below.
One of our district-wide goals has been to expand opportunities for world languages in all grades and to create pathways for students to pursue languages all the way through high school, with options to earn college credit or State Seal of Biliteracy awards. A huge benefit to our language program is the natural link to culture. Today, across the district, our Spanish classes learned about and celebrated the culture of one such Spanish speaking country, Mexico. From dance and history lessons in elementary grades, to music and food in high school, our students enjoyed the recognition of Mexican Independence Day today.
Congratulations to Coronado Middle School for receiving the Silver Recognition for the California PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports) Coalition in recognition of the school’s great work providing academic, behavioral, and social-emotional supports so that every child, every day, can succeed. Well done, CMS staff!!
Have a great weekend,
Karl J. Mueller

Caught Being Awesome!
As our educators, parents, and community come together to connect, challenge, and champion our students, we are humbled by the outpouring of compliments. What a positive testament to our CUSD family!
- Officers Del Bagno and Palmore are wonderful additions to the school campus environment. As a parent, I feel much better knowing that these outstanding officers are available to help keep our schools safe. We have also interacted with them in the community and they are consummate professionals acting as liaisons between the school and the Coronado Police. We are fortunate to have their kind and reassuring presence and we wanted to make sure they know how much they are appreciated!
- Veronica Marquez & Susan Pilgrim: Veronica and Susan are our RBT Coaches at SSES and they have been busy bees supporting students and staff as we get to know one another and our strengths and needs. They bring such expertise and professionalism! We are grateful!
- Alitzel Ortega-Padilla: Alitzel has embraced her new position and skillfully built relationships with our English Language Learners and their teachers. Through her calm, positive demeanor and with an "by any means necessary" approach, her students feel safe and supported as they engage in a new school system and learn a new language.
- Taryn Serna: Taryn is a SPED teacher who has welcomed back the students and a team of IA’a with support, enthusiasm, and love! The children look forward to coming up to her room because it’s filled with a balance of instruction, emotional support, and fun…so much laughter…you may even hear it as you pass her door! She’s been working effortlessly to create schedules, lessons,& supplemental activities that meet the needs of our students as well as the IA’s. She’s the best & we are extremely grateful to have her serving our children!
- Morgan Cummins: Mr. Cummins has always been so friendly and helpful when we have had questions about class scheduling or about particular classes. We are extremely grateful for all of his guidance and help over the years. We know he has his hands full as the counselor for so many students, but he has always done a great job of answering any questions we have had. Now that our child is a senior, we wanted to make sure to thank him for all of his efforts, so THANK YOU for being awesome!!
- Martha Vasquez: Supports our students every day in every way with kindness, respect, and love. Thank you Martha!
- Natsuko Cudney: Mrs. Nat has an amazing way of connecting with students! She is very positive and you can sense the love she has for making sure students are successful- both academically and emotionally. Mrs. Nat has this calming energy surrounding her and our students & staff are beyond lucky to have her working with us!
- Toni Trinidad: Ms. Trinidad told the kids an incredibly engaging story about caterpillars and butterflies, incorporating her real-life experiences raising them in her yard. My 7 year old spent at least 20 minutes recounting the story, and was so enthusiastic about it that I couldn't stop smiling. Thank you to Ms. Trinidad in I-Lab for being such a wonderful, positive force in our kids' lives!
- Gabe Alonzo has been incredibly responsive, helpful and amazing this school year. I am so thankful for his help and support with a student we share. I am grateful to have him as a colleague and resource!

Mobile Device Protection Plan for Families With CUSD Chromebooks
If your student has a CUSD issued Chromebook, you are encouraged to review and consider purchasing the OPTIONAL Mobile Device Protection Plan (MDPP) for the 2023-2024 school year. The annual plan is designed to cover accidental damage of CUSD Chromebooks including screen breakage. In addition, the plan will protect against spills, fire, flood, natural disasters, and theft/loss. Mobile hotspots, power cords, cables, and other accessories are not covered. Intentional damage, improper device storage, and misuse are not covered.
The cost of the plan is $20 per device per year. The plan must be purchased annually at the beginning of each school year or at the time of registration to be valid. To maintain coverage, a new plan must also be purchased if a student is provided with a replacement device due to damage/loss of their previous device. This money will be used to create a dedicated pool of funding to replace or repair covered technology. All money collected through the program will go into a special account that can only be used to replace or repair technology that is covered in the plan. We highly recommend this low-cost protection plan. To purchase a Mobile Device Protection Plan for your student, please use the instructions at the following link: Mobile Device Protection Plan Purchase Instructions.
