Notes From the Principal's Office ~ November 19, 2024
Join us for the BMS Turkey Trot - Tuesday, November 26th
BMS students have been busy training for our upcoming "Turkey Trot" in their PE and Individual Fitness classes.
All BMS families and friends are welcome to come cheer on our runners during our Annual Turkey Trot! The race starts and ends at the track, and our students will be in the bleachers cheering one another on throughout the morning.
Families are asked to please stay on the outside of the fence, as students will be running on the track. Please enter the bleachers on the BMS side, not through the BIS gate. Thank you for your help keeping all students safe during the race.
Race Schedule: (All races start and end at the track)
- Grade 6 Race - 8:15 AM
- Grade 7 Race - 8:45 AM
- Grade 8 Race - 9:15 AM
- Awards - 1:20PM in the BMS Gym - families welcome
Please note that students will be outside for the entire morning. They should dress for the weather!
Student Dismissal Reminder
As a reminder, our school policy is that cell phones should be powered off and in backpacks for the entire day. Classroom phones and the office phone are available to students who need to reach their caregivers.
If students are not feeling well, they should visit the health office. Nurse Kenyon will communicate home and help make a decision about the possible need for a student dismissal. If a student is feeling anxious or stressed, they should seek out their counselor. If your student calls or texts you to pick them up, please remind them to see the counselor or nurse.
We appreciate caregivers helping with this. Too often, teens look to escape a challenging situation or emotion by asking to leave school. Our skilled counselors and nurse can help students work through issues here at school, helping students to build confidence and resiliance!
From our School Counselors
Our November update offers some big ideas about mental health that can be helpful when talking with children about their wellness.
It’s normal for children to believe that positive mental health means almost always experiencing pleasant emotions (ex. happiness) and very rarely experiencing unpleasant feelings (ex. worry). The impact of this perspective is that something is wrong if they occasionally experience unpleasant emotions.
As we talk with kids about their mental health, it’s important that they understand that positive mental health includes:
having emotions that generally match the situation we’re in, both in regards to how big the emotion feels (intensity) and how long the feeling lasts (duration) and
the ability to experience the full range of human emotions (including unpleasant ones).
Although some emotions can feel intensely unpleasant, being able to experience all emotions is really important. For example, although anger can feel intensely unpleasant, it serves to communicate that an outcome did not match our goals and hopes. When channeled, anger can be turned into energy that we can use to impact situations in positive ways (ex. to make change). Because of this, the goal is not to prevent or eliminate emotional experiences, the goal is to manage them so that we can continue to pursue our goals.
Curriculum Corner
Hello families! BMS staff have engaged in taking a portion of the MCAS exam to identify the content and skills necessary for success on the MCAS and the implications for instruction. Teachers are working hard planning lessons and assessments to best prepare your students for success as they move through middle school and into high school and beyond. Please encourage your students to use free resources like Khan Academy and MCAS Practice Tests along with their school IXL accounts for additional practice.
Thank you!
Jessee Clements, Secondary Curriculum Director
