Mrs. Stokes' Notes
Hello Chapman Families,
It was great to see so many families attend parent teacher conferences this past week. I had the pleasure of attending a number of conferences with families from various classes. I was so impressed with the growth that students are showing and the work samples that were demonstrative of the learning that has taken place thus far. Many students shared reflections on how they are doing in class and the goals that they are working to achieve. Students taking ownership in their learning is key in long term success and I am anticipating significant growth will be shown throughout the remainder of the year. If you were unable to make it to parent teacher conferences, I encourage you to reach out to your child's teacher and schedule a time to meet.
This past week, I attended Lt. Browning's presentation at Homer Middle entitled "Parenting in a Digital World." While this presentation showed a lot of concerning information regarding the dangers that our young people face, the message that kept being said over and over again is the importance of connection. Kids need to know that we care enough to check on them. Kids need to have boundaries set and they need to have open conversations, even if they are not comfortable. I encourage each family to check in with your kiddo regularly, check their cell phones, check their contacts or social media accounts. Raising kids is challenging especially when the landscape of what they are dealing with looks vastly different than the one that parents grew up in. If you are struggling with how to begin the process of establishing connection or boundaries with your kiddo, reach out. We can problem solve as a team.
Finally, while the season of celebration is now here, this can be a challenging time for families. If you are struggling with getting snow gear for your family, please reach out. We partner with various agencies that can help make sure that kids have what they need.
As always, I am proud to be a Chapman Eagle and my door is always open.
With Gratitude,
Mrs. Stokes
Chapman Policy for Extended Absences
In preparation for the upcoming moose hunt and other family activities. Chapman wanted to communicate their updated policy for extended absences when students are gone for 5-10 days.
First, Chapman School acknowledges the importance of spending time together as a family and the educational value that comes from traveling. That being said, when students are absent, they miss out on valuable learning that takes place within the classroom. In an effort to support your child in their absence there is a form that needs to be completed. This form needs to be picked up from the office and completed by the student and teacher and signed by the parent and administrator. The form assists in the clear communication between families and school about what is expected while the student is gone.
**For absences longer than 10 consecutive days, as per Board Policy, the student would be unenrolled. Student access to district-provided digital resources and teacher provided work will cease after the 10th day of consecutive absences. The student will be re-enrolled upon return to school.

Alaska Animal Research
Third grade has completed their Alaska animal research which ended with a watercolor art project! Each student chose an Alaska animal to learn more about and then worked hard to represent that animal and their habitat using paint!
