Message from Superintendent Gonzalez
Dear OUSD Community,
As we wrap up this school year, I want to take a moment to congratulate our graduates. On behalf of Orange Unified, we are incredibly proud of what you have achieved during your educational journey and look forward to what you will accomplish in the future.
The world you're stepping into is full of opportunities and challenges. Embrace them with the same spirit that has carried you through graduation. Remember, it's not just about the destination but the experiences and growth along the way.
You have the power to shape the future. Use your knowledge, your skills, and your voice to make a difference, and don't be afraid to take risks. Stay focused on pursuing your dreams and goals. This is only the beginning of even more great things to come for you! Congratulations, Class of 2024!
Sincerely,
Ernie Gonzalez

May 2024 Employees of the Month
The recipients of the “YOU’VE GOT THE EDGE” award for May 2024 are Elena Dull, Teacher at Orange High School, and Johanan Guzman, Office Manager in the Special Education Department. Both Elena and Johanan go above and beyond to serve the staff and students of the Orange Unified School District in ways that reflect the core values of OUSD’s EDGE.
Orange High School Principal Sheryl Anderson had this to say about Elena:
“Elena has been an important and valuable asset to our AVID program. Since she became the Coordinator of this program 3 years ago, we have seen a tremendous growth in the implementation of AVID strategies as seen in our monthly WICOR walks. Orange High School recently received revalidation of being an AVID National Demonstration School in which only 203 schools have received this honor nationwide. Elena’s hard word and commitment played a critical role in this achievement. Her continuous passion for providing excellent teaching and opportunities to all our students is truly appreciated. Her positive impact on the students and school community is priceless."
Special Education Coordinator Sarah Dalton had this to say about Johanan:
“Johanan is a positive influence in the office and in everyone she interacts with. She handles the most challenging situations with ease and a smile on her face. She is always willing to support and go above and beyond to ensure the department is able to provide care, support, and service to the students. She demonstrates excellence by her high caliber of work and her willingness to jump in whenever a need arises. She brings creative and innovative ideas to help ensure support is being provided as efficiently as possible. We are grateful to have such a committed and invaluable team member."
Congratulations again to Elena Dull and Johanan Guzman. Thank you both for your dedication and devotion to the students of the Orange Unified School District.
National Merit Scholarship Finalists
Congratulations to Canyon High School’s Jiya M Patel and Villa Park High School’s Jason Trinh on their selection as winners of the National Merit $2500 Scholarship. This Scholarship is underwritten by National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) with its own funds, and scholars may use their awards at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university.
National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the Finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors. These Scholars were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, who appraised a substantial amount of information submitted by both the Finalists and their high schools: the academic record, including difficulty level of subjects studied and grades earned; scores from the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®); contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay written by the Finalist; and a recommendation written by a high school official.
This year’s National Merit Scholarship Program began in October 2022 when high school juniors took the PSAT/NMSQT, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. Last fall, the highest-scoring participants in each state, representing less than one percent of the nation’s high school seniors, were named Semifinalists on a state-representational basis. More than 16,000 Semifinalists had an opportunity to continue in the competition. From the Semifinalist group, over 15,000 students met the very high academic standards and other requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition.
Congratulations to our highest achievers of the Class of 2024!

Fletcher Kindergarten Student Mei W. Writes Internationally Recognized Poem
Fletcher Academy kindergartener Mei W. wrote a poem that was ranked #1 in the United States and #3 in the world at the River of Words competition, the largest annual international youth poetry and art contest in the world. The River of Words competition invites students ages 5-19 to submit creative work exploring their environments and humanity's actions on the natural world around us. It also strives to celebrate students’ imaginative and artistic interpretations of nature, such as having the U.S. Poet Laureate honor previous winners and finalists at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.
Amongst the 2,500 submissions this year, Mei’s poem, “Royal Flowers,” was ultimately selected as the second runner-up in the kindergarten to 2nd grade division and will be published in the 2023-2024 River of Words Anthology. In her artist’s statement that will accompany the publication of her poem, Mei thanked her teacher, Ms. Lee, for helping her with her writing. Ms. Lee has been prioritizing literary work and written expression all year, and her kindergarteners have flourished under her guidance.
In addition, Mei was also chosen as one of the winners of the Sarah Mook Poetry Contest. This contest awarded her with a $50 check to buy books for Fletcher Academy. The Sarah Mook contest is a national poetry contest honoring a little girl who loved to write poetry. There were about 1,000 submissions this year, and Mei's poem was selected as the second-place winner for the kindergarten age group.
Go Falcons!
