Principals' Message
As we approach the mid-year mark, we have completed many mid-year assessments to check in on students reading, writing and math learning to date. Progress reports will be e-mailed home the afternoon of Thursday 1/23 for all students in grades K-4. We look forward to sharing your child’s progress with you. This is also the time of year that we look even more closely at attendance, tardy and early release data for students. BPS will be sending out letters in regards to attendance, tardy and early release data late next week. If your student has missed more than 10-days for any reason and we don’t have clear documentation of an extended trip or extended illness, you may receive a communication requesting a meeting to set-up an attendance plan or tardy plan. The HUUSD attendance procedures have a specific set of actions that may occur after a student misses 10-days, 15-days or 20-days. Anything beyond 20-days may become a formal truancy concern. Again, if we have clear documentation about a situation (doctor’s notes etc.), we may not require anything further. We communicate and hold these meetings in order to better understand what is getting in the way of a student’s attendance and/or getting to school on time. Being in school and arriving on time helps set our students up for their learning. We care deeply about the well-being and success of each student and the first way we can do this is to ensure our students are in school and on time. Of course, we do understand that illness happens and we appreciate students staying home when they are too unwell to be here and are potentially spreading germs. As a reminder: BPS opens at 7:30 am and students are marked late when they arrive after 7:45 am. If your student is struggling with absences and or is tardy frequently, we can also help brainstorm strategies to try. We know it can be complicated and that many factors come into play with these issues. If you have any questions about our attendance and tardy procedures, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Reminder - no school for students on Monday 1/20 in honor of Martin Luther King day. Our ski and ride program resumes for 3rd and 4th graders on Monday 1/27. Have a wonderful weekend! Sarah & Chris

Parents often wonder: What can we do to keep our children healthy? Are there ways to boost the immune system and ward off illnesses?
Yes!! Here's what you can do to help keep your children healthy.
Eat a healthy diet- eat lots of fruits and veggies and avoid foods with added sugar.
Make sure your child gets enough sleep: sleep needs vary by age
Help your child stay active: exercise keeps us healthy and less likely to get sick.
Manage stress: encourage play and access to activities, spend time together
Make sure your child is up to date on important vaccines: it’s not too late to get a flu vaccine!
Don't forget the simple precautions
Wash your hands.
Cover your coughs and sneezes with your elbow.
Stay away from sick people to the extent that you can.

Conscious Parenting
Start off 2025 with Conscious Parenting ~ new year, new tools. Through four weekly zoom sessions, Suzy will cover several topics that will help us shift the family dynamic. Attending all four will provide a greater understanding, however, each session will provide unique tools. The small group format allow for more customized sessions; you can talk to Suzy about your own parenting challenges. Having access to a certified conscious parenting professional has been helpful for many previous attendees. This FREE series is designed for parents of children of all ages, grandparents, teachers, coaches and caregivers of children.
Some Topics Covered in this Series:
- New Coping Strategies
- Emotional Regulation/Intelligence
- Identifying Core Beliefs
- Reparenting
Conscious Parenting includes clear, consistent boundaries in order to feel safe. It also is gaining the ability to hold space for big emotions which for some of us can be very difficult because it was not modeled for us in childhood. Big feeling were not allowed. We will learn how to do this together if it was not modeled for us as children. Emotional intelligence, building a self regulation tool box for yourself and gaining coping skills is absolutely essential in Conscious Parenting. Visit https://www.greenmountainconsciousparenting.com/ to learn more about Suzy.
Hannah's House sponsors this event, making it free to the community.

Waterbury Rec: Summer Camp Registration
Waterbury Recreation is excited to announce the details of our Summer Day Camp 2025. Most importantly, registration begins on February 4.
Every year, we aim to improve our camp. We listen to feedback from families and staff, and have taken the time to update our program with many of these requests, while continuing to emphasize building a safe, fun, and enriching child care option for our community.
In 2025, we will continue to offer themed camps: themes are a terrific way to cater activities to campers’ interests. We will make sure that pool time happens nearly every day, weather and field trip schedules permitting. We will continue to offer swim lessons to all campers in 2025, but will be moving them later in the day to make drop-off less stressful and (hopefully!) have warmer swimming conditions.
This year’s camp prices will increase to allow us to run a high-quality camp, yet we will be keeping our camp as affordable as possible. The full session camp (8 weeks) will cost $1,325 for residents and $1,825 for non-residents. And we will continue to offer scholarships for families via an application process.
You can learn more about camp and the updates for 2025 on our website: https://waterburyvt.myrec.com/info/activities/program_details.aspx?ProgramID=30094
