2020 Students Scholarship Recognitions
Dr. Tinou Tran (Director, Multilingual Programs) and Lili Dibai (ESL Coordinator) joined TexTESOL IV on August 1, 2020, for a virtual reception via Zoom to recognize and honor its 2020 Inaugural High School Scholarship recipients. Three of the six winners were Fort Bend ISD graduating seniors in May 2020. They each received $500 to help pay for college expenses. After a brief introduction of the educators in attendance and their relationships with the students, they took turns reading their winning essays. Each of the essays, detailing the students' unique experiences in an ESL or Bilingual Program, touched the hearts of all in attendance. We wish our recent graduate's much success as they embark on their continued educational journey.

2020 Staff Scholarship Recognitions
Multilingual Programs congratulates Ms. Laura Rivera of Goodman Elementary School for being named a 2020 Suburban Houston Association for Bilingual Education Paraprofessional Scholarship. SHABE offers a $500.00 scholarship to paraprofessionals wishing to pursue a teaching career in bilingual education.
Ms. Rivera serves as a Special Education Aide at Goodman, and previously served as a Bilingual Aide. She is currently enrolled at the University of St. Thomas pursuing a degree in Bilingual Education. In her scholarship essay, she wrote of how she “hated school” as a language learner because of the injustices she faced, and how she finally encountered her high school ESL teacher right here in Fort Bend ISD who “was able to connect to all of her students regardless of language, gender or race.” Ms. Rivera further shared that she wants “to be the welcoming face that lets those students know that things are rough at the start, but they will turn out all right.”

Learning Model Change
Will I have the option to change my child’s learning model if it is not at the end of a grading period?
We are asking parents to choose a selection for the entire nine weeks; however, Fort Bend ISD’s Department of Student Affairs has created parameters for parents to initiate changes due to extenuating circumstances during a grading period and outside of the defined selection window.
The Learning Model Change Request Form is available in Skyward Family Access, under “online forms.”
Campuses will consider each request on a case-by-case basis, with consideration of campus space, staffing, and teaching assignments.

2020 Multilingual Summer Programs
During the Summer of 2020, over 600 rising kindergartens and rising 1st grade English learners participated in Multilingual Programs' first-ever Virtual English Learner Summer School Programs. Several factors contributed to the summer programs' success and allowed student engagement and attendance to remain consistent.
Program Design, Curriculum, and Instruction
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ESL and Bilingual Program Coordinators and Specialists collaborated to choose instructional materials. They worked with curriculum writers to design a virtual curriculum offered over four weeks, with a combination of synchronous and asynchronous instruction. The curriculum included lessons from the TEA’s Texas Home Learning Summer At-Home Learning for Prekindergarten and Kindergarten, as well as a web-based resource called Reading A-Z.
Soccer Starts at Home
Technology
Because the curriculum courses were delivered through Schoology, Fort Bend ISD arranged to provide iPads and Wi-Fi hotspots to all students who indicated a need for the summer programs. Teachers took the time to build relationships and make English learners feel comfortable in their new learning environment by teaching them how to navigate Schoology and the virtual meeting platform.
Materials Distribution
The 2020 summer school principals were able to meet parents when they stopped by to receive their child’s summer instructional materials. Each student received a printed Texas Home Learning Workbook, technology (as requested), and the donated soccer balls were given on a first-come, first-serve basis.
